Royals Minor League Update: Breaking down KC's busy week of prospect promotions

While the Kansas City Royals have sent some of their 2026 draftees out to affiliated baseball assignments, the draft class represents just a drop in the proverbial bucket of players within the organization. From the youngest players in the DSL to the most grizzled veterans in Triple-A Omaha, all would welcome a promotion to the next level, one step closer to realizing a spot in the big league clubhouse.

The Royals shift Low-A, High-A rosters in promotion-heavy Tuesday

The Royals announced quite a few transactions on Tuesday down on the farm, especially with players shifting from DSL Royals Ventura to Fortuna, or vice versa. I was certainly holding out for a certain 17-year-old outfielder from Ventura to be making the jump to ACL Royals, but alas that was not on the wire. Kansas City did send some of their draftees out to affiliated ball, with four pitchers joining either Low-A Columbia or High-A Quad Cities on Tuesday.

Left-handed pitcher Ethan McElvain represents the highest draftee joining the River Bandits, after Kansas City drafted him 151st overall out of Arkansas. The southpaw's trademark handlebar mustache was a sight to see in relief innings against SEC competition last year, when he struck out 34.4% of the batters he faced across 38.1 innings pitched.

His new teammate Jackson Cleveland was another SEC reliever, representing the University of Oklahoma instead. Cleveland did not have quite the dominant 2026 season McElvain did, but Kansas City signed Cleveland as an undrafted free agent after he was a steady four-year reliever for the Sooners. After all, he was the man to throw the final strike securing Oklahoma's College World Series win over the North Carolina Tar Heels.

The Royals drafted Justin LeGuernic and Dalton Hill in the sixth and 13th rounds, respectively, this summer. A southpaw, LeGuernic made 40 appearances for the Clemson Tigers across three seasons. His box score stats were nothing to write home about, but scouts raved about his arsenal ahead of the draft, with MLB Pipeline saying he "owns one of the more unhittable sliders in the college class." Hill was a career reliever for Nicholls State, recording a 1.35 ERA and striking out 19 batters in 20.0 innings pitched this past season.

A pair of prospects made the jump from ACL to Columbia as well, joining LeGuernic and Hill. Infielders Tyson Moran and Jhonayker Ugarte joined the Fireflies roster.

This is Ugarte's third season in the Royals organization, and the 19-year-old took steps forward across the board at the plate, slashing .297/.390/.421 in 42 games. The Royals drafted Moran out of Canada in the 13th round last year, and the 20-year-old posted a .944 OPS in his first professional season. Moran primarily played first base in Arizona, but his bat made him more than worth keeping in the lineup. His first impression in Columbia was an emphatic one, with a two-run home run on Tuesday night.

While there are certainly other top prospects deserving and poised for promotions before the season is over, the Royals are obviously shuffling things down on the farm. That hopefully has a ripple effect for others around them; whether that is a good or bad effect, only the players can determine that.
