Royals Playoff Odds: What would it take for KC to turn insane run into Wild Card reality?

Just when seemingly the entire baseball world had written off the Kansas City Royals this season, they somehow have found a way to make this season even more an emotional roller coaster and start giving fans something they haven't had in months...hope. Yes, it's the end of August and the there's at least some reason to have hope in the Kansas City Royals amid their current eight game winning streak.

For awhile, it looked as though the Royals, alongside the Athletics and Los Angeles Angels were the teams firmly below the cutoff point for postseason contention. After losing 1-0 on Aug. 15 to the aforementioned Angels, Kansas City sat 24 games below .500 and 11 games back of the final American League Wild Card spot. No one would've been remiss to count them out.

But fast-forward to their August 24 off-day and the story has shifted. Their eight-straight wins have propelled them no higher in the standings, but it's narrowed their games back margin significantly. They now sit just 7.5 games back of the Cleveland Guardians for that elusive final wild card spot following a perfect seven-game homestand. It's still a long shot, but at well under double-digit games back now and the pace they're currently on, belief isn't something that's utterly unbelievably far-fetched anymore.

The odds are still firmly stacked against the Royals to make a magical run to playoffs

Now, with 30 games left in the season, a 7.5 game deficit doesn't seem entirely insurmountable. And when you consider the fact that the Royals have seen firsthand some stretch-run heroics from division rivals, with the Detroit Tigers turning the tables in 2024 and the same Guardians they're currently chasing defying the odds to claim the 2025 AL Central title, that's even more reason for motivation.

However, as touched upon earlier, even though the gap has been narrowed between the Royals and the postseason picture, they haven't jumped any teams. Not only do they have to continue to win a torrid pace, but they also need to ensure seven teams do the exact opposite. By the end of trying to unscramble all of this, it could easily look like a red rope-filled bulletin board situation.

And it's not as if they have an insanely easy schedule to round out the season either. It's not the hardest of remaining slates by any means, but at 13th overall with a .504 opposing win percentage they still sit within the hardest half of the mix. Pair with that teams ahead of them in the standings like Cleveland (third easiest) Toronto (second easiest) and Seattle (easiest) holding much easier schedules and there's only more reason to think the Royals will have their hands full attempting to nab a Wild Card spot - even in one of the weakest AL postseason races we've seen in some time.

Not to mention, the likes of stars such as Cole Ragans and potentially Maikel Garcia, are either confirmed out for the year or could very well find themselves being more sheltered in their recovery, like in Garcia's case with his hamstring. They still sit behind the eight ball even if their recent run of form would suggest otherwise.

There's a reason as to why FanGraphs still currently gives them a firm 0% shot at the playoffs in any scenario. There's just too much standing in Kansas City's way even if they have found a way to win more often than not since the All-Star break.

They may not be down and out yet, but the Royals need to ensure they not only keep winning, but keep beating those teams in their way to really start making up ground. They'll have their first chance to do so when the head north of the border on Tuesday to open a three-game series with the Blue Jays.
