Royals need to exercise immense caution with Maikel Garcia as injury nightmare continues

They can't afford to let things get worse.

Just when the Kansas City Royals thought they were getting back to a sense of normalcy with a pair of key cogs in Maikel Garcia and Vinnie Pasquantino finally returning to the lineup this week. However, as has seemingly become custom for the Royals this season, when good news comes so to does the bad. While the Royals might've completed the four-game sweep over the Athletics, it came with the unfortunate news that Garcia had been bit by the injury bug again in the finale.

It may not have been his lingering hand issue bothering him this time, but an early exit because of a hamstring injury is nothing to take lightly. And from the sounds of the reports surfacing, Garcia may not be back anytime soon. According to several insiders including Anne Rogers of MLB.com, manager Matt Quatraro has stated that it's "likely" the Gold Glover ends up back on the injured list.

The Royals now find themselves in a predicament. Despite the joy of a mid-week August sweep, they now have to get used to life without Garcia again. Although it may be familiar for them this season, the fact remains that when he's at his peak, Garcia is a game-changing core member of this roster.

This means the Royals really have a need to protect him, especially if they're planning on gearing up for a postseason push in 2027. Hamstrings can be tricky and there's no guaranteeing he'd be back anyways before the season ends. But there's still over a month left in the campaign and perhaps there's always a chance he does get healthy enough to return before the season's up depending on the severity.

As nice as it would be to get him some on-field momentum, Kansas City shouldn't have any sort of urgency to rush him back. He hasn't looked right all season thanks to injury. His defense is still world-class, but his .709 OPS and 96 wRC+ leave a lot to be desired and look far from the All-Star bat he was in 2025 and the World Baseball Classic MVP he was in March. Kansas City needs to ensure his issues remain in 2026 and if that means shutting him down, then so be it.

Royals don't have many impactful options at third base beyond Maikel Garcia

Now, the Royals have done okay at third base this season despite Garcia's injury. But the fact remains they're still middle of the pack at best and still below-average in many metrics this season. Their 98 wRC+ at third base ranks just 17th in baseball and their .713 OPS sits just 16th.

And the fact remains that while their replacements haven't been bad by any means, Nick Loftin and his .696 OPS and 95 wRC+ have not exactly been ground-breaking as the primary replacement option. He may look more like a 2027 solution for their bench after years of underperformance prior to this season, but he's not exactly performed to a starting degree on a team with contending ambitions.

Beyond that, their depth has been cobbled together with ex-MLB talents stashed away in Triple-A Omaha. They've relied upon infield names like Josh Rojas and Andrew Velazquez for injury cover this season, with other underachievers like Kevin Newman and Connor Kaiser waiting in the wings. And while up-and-comers like Jack Pineda and Jacob Berry have shown promise this season, they're far from surefire solutions for the future should Garcia's injury woes continue into next season.

With depth like this and there never being any sort of guarantee of new names coming through the door in the offseason, the Royals need to ensure that Garcia is a fit as fit can be come Opening Day 2027.
