Riding an incredible eight-game winning streak, the Kansas City Royals don't look utterly hopeless like they have for much of the 2026 season. In fact, while still certainly facing long-shot odds, amid this winning streak and winning second-half in general, the Royals are no longer in a double-digit game deficit of the final AL Wild Card spot. It's not great chances by any stretch, but when a team is winning like Kansas City is right now, postseason conversations are bound to come up. After all, the gap between them and the Detroit Tigers is now smaller than the gap between them and the lowly Athletics.
Now, winning isn't enough for the Royals. With seven teams standing in the way of them and the Cleveland Guardians for the final Wild Card spot, they'll need some help from across the league if they want to make the impossible a reality. Entering an all-important road series with the Wild Card-hunting Toronto Blue Jays, these are the types of series the Royals need to take advantage of to narrow the gap. And luckily for them after the latest injury news regarding Shane Bieber, continuing their winning ways may've gotten a lot easier.
The Blue Jays placed the former Cy Young award winner on the 15-day IL ahead of the opener of this series. Bieber, a familiar pest to the Royals during his days in Cleveland, was slated to square off against the Royals lineup on Wednesday. They already avoided having to see potential Cy Young frontrunner Dylan Cease and promising trade deadline acquisition José Soriano. So, the thought of now eliminating Bieber and his respectable mid-4.00s ERA too only adds to their luck.

A major blow to this rotation given how well Bieber had been pitching.
Toronto will now have to figure out who will book-end Max Scherzer and his 7.40 ERA Tuesday and Spencer Arrighetti on Thursday, who's struggled overall since arriving in Toronto at the trade deadline. Regardless, it's the best possible outcome for a Royals team in need of as many breaks as possible right now.
Royals need to capitalize on Wild Card rivals to keep dismal October hopes alive
As touched upon already, the Royals will need plenty of help elsewhere if they want to leapfrog teams and make up the eight-game gap between them and the final AL Wild Card spot. To do this they'll need to take advantage of their remaining series against those teams in front of them. After all, their strength of remaining schedule featuring an upper-half .505 opposing win-percentage isn't exactly ideal for a postseason push.
Tuesday will mark the first of six remaining games against the Blue Jays. They also have six remaining games against the Guardians and three against the Astros. While they'll need to continue winning elsewhere, half of their remaining 30 games being against direct rivals could go a long way in climbing out of the hole they've put themselves in if they can mix in some sweeps or at the very least series wins against them.
Last season, 87 wins was good enough to nab the Wild Card spot. Considering that September is just around the corner and .500 is still the bench mark of playoff team in the American League, perhaps whoever lands that last Wild Card spot won't need as bullish of a win total to get things done. That certainly favors the 58-win Royals.
That being said, with the Royals needing to go 21-7 in their last 30 just to get to .500, it would take nothing short of a miracle to get to October and perhaps their second-half efforts are too little too late.
