Maikel Garcia injury created Royals roster shuffle giving surging farmhand next MLB opportunity

They'll get a first look at a potential lasting solution.

The Kansas City Royals continued their homestand this weekend with a three-game set against the Detroit Tigers, following a four-game sweep of the visiting Athletics. But they didn't start at full strength after third baseman Maikel Garcia landed on the 10-day IL ahead of the weekend divisional matchup.

The All-Star third baseman came up clutching his hamstring after rounding third base in the series finale against the Athletics, never even making a move to reach the base safely and drawing manager Matt Quatraro and his staff out of the dugout. It was apparent in that moment that something was wrong with Garcia, and Quatraro said after the game that he would likely land on the IL after just being reinstated earlier this week.

Garcia was just one of four players Kansas City shuffled on Friday with the position player Kansas City elevated to take Garcia's spot was one the Royals have not seen yet in outfielder Matthew Lugo.

The Royals claimed Lugo off waivers earlier this year from the Los Angeles Angels, where he struggled in an abbreviated 2025 look for the AL West club. Whether his time with the Royals will turn out any better remains to be seen. He has been a consistent above-average bat in Omaha, slashing .271/.320/.531 with a 110 wRC+ across 53 games. That is the best extended performance Lugo has produced at Triple-A in his career, and in his age-25 season, there is hope that the 2019 second-round pick can contribute to the red-hot Royals.

This is a disappointing development for Garcia, who alongside returning first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino seemingly provided a jolt to Kansas City's lineup. The Venezuelan missed 46 games with a left hand muscle strain, and now with a hamstring strain, it is worth wondering if Royals fans will see him play again this year.

Lugo does have seven games started at third base for Omaha, but he is primarily an outfielder. Kansas City will likely lean on utilityman Nick Loftin to hold down the hot corner for the time being, as he is starting Friday's game there and has a career-high 56 appearances at the position this season.

Royals also promoted familiar reliever after Carlos Duran's poor second showing

Reliever Carlos Duran, who just made his team debut this week, struggled later in the Athletics series with his control and was also sent back down to Triple-A Omaha. Veteran reliever José Cuas takes his place in the bullpen, continuing an up-and-down year in his return to the Royals organization.

Cuas has only made 10 appearances for the Royals this year, but this is his fourth stint on the big league roster in 2026. He carries a paltry 1.64 ERA with Kansas City in 11.0 innings pitched and has not allowed a run in his last eight appearances dating back to July 6.

Cuas broke into the majors with Kansas City back in 2022, but following some lost seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs, he has seemingly found his footing once again. In his age-32 season, there is little reason to think Cuas is a lockdown option coming out of the pen for 2027, but so far so good for the righty in 2026.

Duran's team debut was all smiles, as he notched his first MLB win on Tuesday after shutting out the Athletics while the lineup scored three runs in walk-off fashion. But his next appearance was far from optimal, as he walked three of the five batters he faced, accounting for both of the runs the Athletics scored in the series finale. Kansas City knew he had a volatile track record with command, but after failing to find the strike zone consistently in that outing, there is clearly work still to be done for the former Los Angeles Dodgers farmhand.
