Kansas City Royals Alex Gordon Hitting Off Tee

The Kansas City Royals may have already made their biggest moves of the trade deadline, but that does not mean that they are finished adding reinforcements. In fact, the Royals lineup is a step closer in getting another key piece back in the lineup, as Alex Gordon took the next step in his rehab yesterday.

Gordon, who had already been a throwing program and work on a treadmill and in the pool, hit off of a tee yesterday. He had two rounds of ten swings each, instead of the 17 or 38 one would have hoped for (please do not fine this Royals blogger), and plans on doing the same again today.

This is actually a step ahead of where Gordon normally would be. Instead of just swinging the bat, as would normally be the case, Gordon managed to accelerate the process slightly as he was able to use the tee. Should things go well and Gordon does not experience any pain in his groin, he is hoping to take batting practice in the cages by the middle of next week.

Getting Alex Gordon back could be the final piece of the puzzle for the Kansas City Royals. With Ben Zobrist likely to shift over to second when Gordon returns, the Royals lineup would be much deeper. Should Cueto prove to be the stabilizing force he is expected to be on the starting rotation, it would be difficult to find a weakness on the Royals roster.

Hopefully, everything goes well with Gordon on this next step in his rehab. He may still be a long way away from returning to game action, but his return from injury is coming along nicely. In fact, Gordon is likely ahead of schedule, making his return from this injury prior to the beginning of September even more likely.

The Kansas City Royals need Alex Gordon back to be the team that we all think they can be. Fortunately, Gordon appears to be right on schedule, if not a bit ahead.
