KC Royals Mike Moustakas Should Be an All-Star

There is nothing quite like voting for the the All-Star Game. While some people just blindly vote for the bigger names or for their hometown players, others pour over the statistics, looking to make sure that those players who are truly worthy get their votes. It is fascinating to see how different fans regard voting for the All-Star team.

If you happen to be one of those fans who pores over the statistics to find the most worthy player, third base in the American League may be a surprise. Looking at those players who would qualify for a batting title, one name truly stands out. He is first in batting average, on base percentage, hits and runs, while ranking second in doubles, OPS and slugging percentage among third basemen. That player is none other than the KC Royals Mike Moustakas.

The fact that Moustakas is a worthy candidate for the All-Star team at this point in the season would have seemed insane a month ago. Yet, it is impossible to argue with the results. He has begun to not only hit to the opposite field, but to drive the ball with authority there. When teams are getting out of the shift due to Moustakas’ new found ability to use left field, he has been turning on the ball and pulling it through the hole on the right side. Finally, the Royals have that complete hitter they had hoped for.

You could see the transformation beginning last season. After being sent to Omaha for those ten days, Moustakas came back with what appeared to be a different attitude. He was looking for pitches to drive, and began to expect success. While that did not happen nearly as much as Moustakas and the Royals would have liked in the regular season, he truly came alive during the Royals postseason run.

That carried over into Spring Training, where Mike Moustakas once again hammered the Cactus League. Yet, we had seen that before – Moustakas would be Mr. March, then fall flat once the calender flipped to April and the games mattered. But that has not been the case at all this year. Instead, it seems that we are all witnessing the breakout of Mike Moustakas. It truly is wonderful to see.

Should Mike Moustakas continue to produce at this pace, he certainly deserves to make his first All-Star Game. It would be a fitting honor and testament to his transformation and the patience that the KC Royals showed with him over his first four major league seasons.
