KC Royals Reportedly Looking to Extend Salvador Perez Again

When it comes to discussing extension candidates on the KC Royals, perhaps the most obvious player to look at is Alex Gordon. After all, Gordon is in the last year of his contract, unless one wants to count his extremely team friendly $12.5 Million player’s option. In all likelihood, the Royals will be looking to have Gordon locked up going forward.

According to Jon Heyman’s article yesterday, the Royals actually feel quite positive about coming to terms with an extension with Gordon. Unlike their attempts at an extension with Ervin Santana or James Shields, Gordon may be a lot more receptive. As the face of the franchise, and a leader on the only team he has ever played for, those sentimental feelings may help sway Gordon to remain in Kansas City. Of course, having it said that the Royals and David Glass are willing to do whatever it takes to keep Gordon as a member of the KC Royals certainly helps.

While we know that the Royals are certainly planning on getting Alex Gordon locked up if possible, an interesting note from that article concerned a player that is already signed to a long term extension. With Salvador Perez under team control through 2019, it would not seem as though there would be any urgency in addressing his situation.

However, this is not the path the Royals may be choosing. Instead, Heyman reports that the Royals will look to speak with Perez and his representatives this offseason in the hopes of signing the All-Star to yet another contract extension, virtually guaranteeing that Perez will remain a Royal throughout his career.

While it may seem a bit premature to engage Perez in contract talks once again, the Royals may be able to generate quite a bit of goodwill with him and his representation. They certainly do not need to, as he is on an extremely team friendly contract that brings him into his prime. Yet, by engaging Perez at the end of the season, as Heyman indicates the Royals are considering, this would show a true commitment by Glass and the front office to keep this core together for more than the next few years.

Much like when the Rays extended Evan Longoria despite his being in the midst of a team friendly extension, this would be a matter of the KC Royals furthering their commitment to one of the true stars on the team. Having Salvador Perez, an excellent player at a premium position, signed into the 2020’s, will just continue to prove that the Royals of old no longer exist. It would indeed help keep this new Golden Era of Royals baseball to continue onward.

It seems as though the KC Royals have two contract extensions that they are looking to address this offseason. Hopefully, both get done, and Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez can truly be Forever Royal.
