Yordano Ventura

In a dynasty league, Yordano Ventura is certainly worth snagging and hanging on to. If he continues to develop as the Kansas City Royals hope, and becomes the type of pitcher we all think he is capable of being, he could well turn out to be the ace of the Royals pitching staff over the latter half of this decade, and possibly beyond.

However, that does not mean that he is ready to be that type of pitcher in a yearly league. While Ventura could well improve upon his 14-10 record, 3.20 ERA and 1.295 WHiP this season, that improvement may not be enough to move him into the top twenty or thirty in terms of fantasy league starters, especially if his strikeout rate remains less than nine per nine innings pitched.

On the national stage of the playoffs, Ventura was certainly impressive. His fastball, routinely over 100 MPH even into the seventh inning, is more than enough to attract attention. With that pure ability, Ventura is likely to be a target of speculation for fantasy purposes.

Yordano Ventura may, in time, become a truly dominant starter, both for the Kansas City Royals and for fantasy baseball purposes. It just does not seem likely that he will be at that point this season.
