Royals have shocking offseason plans for 17-year-old prospect Angeibel Gomez

Could Angeibel Gomez make a future Kansas City Royals' roster as a teenager? It's way too early to even consider, but that doesn't mean it isn't fun to talk about. And with the organization already giving the 17-year-old incredible opportunities, they clearly have big plans for one of their best and brightest prospects. 

The Royals announced they will be sending Gomez to play in the Arizona Fall League. He will join fellow top prospects from 29 other organizations as they look to showcase their skills and make a case for their MLB potential. In the past, superstars like Derek Jeter, Roy Halladay, Albert Pujols, and Mike Trout have all played in the AFL before starting their storied careers. 

While it's already an amazing accomplishment for Gomez, he will also become the second youngest player in the history of the AFL. Michael De León was about a month younger than Gomez when he played for the Surprise Saguaros in 2014. Unfortunately for De León, he couldn’t quite put everything together throughout his eight-year career in the minors leagues. He last played for the Louisville Bats in the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2022. 

Much like De León before him, Gomez will also play for the Saguaros when the league kicks off in early October. But for Gomez and the Royals, they're hoping that things unfold a little differently this time around. 

Angeibel Gomez already has the tools to be the Royals' next superstar 

It's honestly quite shocking to see how quickly Gomez has impressed scouts across baseball. In just 47 career minor league games, he has been named as the 81st best prospect in all of baseball. Even with years of development still left in his game, he's already being described as a five-tool player. 

While he boasts 70 grade speed, Gomez has been making the biggest impact with his bat. In 144 at-bats in 2026, he posted an impressive 361/.467/.653 slash line with Royals Ventura in the Dominican Summer League. His nine home runs and 38 RBI led the club in each category. His 1.119 OPS was also more than 100 points higher than the next player. 

Of course it's way too early to start plugging Gomez into future Royals’ lineups with Bobby Witt Jr. and Carter Jensen. However, his level of talent makes it difficult to not feel optimistic about his career outlook, especially with a team primed to contend in the AL Central.

De León could be seen as a cautionary tale for the Royals at managing expectations around extremely young prospects. But even he lacked the five-tool ability that Gomez currently has.  

The AFL may serve as a litmus test in Gomez’s young baseball career. He will be facing some of the best pitching prospects in baseball. Prospects that are not only years older than him, but more experienced. This will likely be an invaluable experience for Gomez as he continues his development as a pro ball player. But that's all that it'll be.

This opportunity won’t determine how his future will pan out or even spark discussions on whether or not he’ll play for the Royals in 2027. But it will be fun to see just how good he can be under some brighter lights.
