There's no shortage of areas the Kansas City Royals can look to this offseason to improve upon their second straight year of Octoberless-baseball. With such an inconsistent offense this season, many fans will look to the lineup to find ways to elevate their core of Bobby Witt Jr., Jac Caglianone, and Carter Jensen.
That's precisely the direction Bleacher Report recently proposed, making a bold pitch that the Royals should sign Randy Arozarena. The All-Star is widely regarded as the top free agent hitter on the market, and would certainly go a long way to reshaping this outfield.
Big-name free agent splashes haven't really been the Royals' M.O., but this could be a win-now offseason for Kansas City. Adding a perennial 20-20 candidate would only advance that cause.
But the lineup isn't the Royals' only problem. A team doesn't lose 93 games without multiple holes on the roster. While Arozarena would be a big and welcome addition, he doesn't address the Royals most pressing issue — pitching.
They're set to open the 2027 campaign with numerous starting rotation options still recovering from season-ending surgeries, their current list of healthy rotation arms has it's unique red flags, and their bullpen lacks middle relief arms on top of back-end and closing options.
Royals' 2027 offseason priority has to be on improving their pitching situation
The Royals are likely to be without Cole Ragans, as well Stephen Kolek, Luinder Avila, Ryan Bergert and Ben Kudrna by the time Opening Day 2027 rolls around. There's a need for more arms in general before even taking stock of who's already in the mix.
Despite the injuries, their rotation isn't barren with the likes of Seth Lugo, Michael Wacha and Noah Cameron set to be part of the roster in 2027. A pair of names in their mid-to-late 30s, however, can't be a penciled in as a guarantee to lead the staff, and Cameron was as inconsistent as any arm last year.
As much as Royals fans may want to sign franchise-altering names like Tarik Skubal, Freddy Peralta, or Michael King, that's simply an unrealistic mindset. Nevertheless, there are plenty of affordable arms like Kevin Gausman or Sonny Gray who could be in play this winter.
Moreover, the Royals may need to get creative and look at veteran names likeTony Gonsolin, Aaron Civale, or Martin Pérez. These types of pitchers are from from guarantees, but they could certainly add worthwhile competition for an already depleted staff.
Arozarena is a nice name to dream on and is definitely a fit the Royals shouldn't shy away from. But given the price tag, if signing him comes at the expense of strengthening their pitching staff, then it wouldn't be the game-changer many would view it to be.
