David Shields could be half of the Royals' next great pitching duo

The Kansas City Royals have had one of the better pitching duos for the last few years. Since joining the Royals in 2024, Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha have been excellent at the top of the Royals rotation. The two of them are top 30 in fWAR since they signed as free agents in the 2023-24 offseason.

Unfortunately, they won't be around forever. Wacha is 35, having one of the best seasons of his career, and under contract through at least 2027 (team option for 2028). Lugo, though, took another big step back in 2026, but is also under contract through 2027, with the potential to stay until 2028 with a conditional option.

Both pitchers are in the twilight of their careers, and while they may still have something in the tank and will be around for at least another season, it doesn't hurt to see what the next wave of talent could be bringing as a replacement.

The Royals have two arms in High-A could create the next 1-2 punch in K.C.

David Shields is a starting pitcher drafted in the second round by the Royals in 2024. MLB Pipeline currently ranks the lefty as the Royals' No. 4 prospect. He pitched all of 2026 at High-A for the Quad City River Bandits, where he posted a 4.01 ERA in 116⅔ innings spanning 25 starts. Shields struck out 139 batters and only walked 39 this season, while also having a 1.08 WHIP. His numbers are hampered by two rough starts to begin the year. When those are removed, his ERA falls to 3.61.

The 6-foot-2 lefty utilizes a four-pitch mix. He has a fastball that currently sits in the low 90s, a slider, a curveball, and a changeup that MLB Pipeline describes as a "plus pitch". His biggest asset currently is his command and deception, which is why he ranks so highly in the top 30 despite his age and not possessing high velocity.

Shields is the second pitcher in the Royals top 30. Kendry Chourio, an 18-year-old right handed pitcher from Venezuala is the No. 1 player in Royals system, and just outside the top-50. Chourio is also pitching in High-A. The two of them could be Kansas City's next Wacha and Lugo.

Shields just put in a very nice performance in the High-A playoffs for Quad City. He threw six shutout innings, allowing just five baserunners, and striking out seven. Outings like that can be very helpful in the development of a young pitcher, because of the added stress of the playoffs plus the fatigue of a long season.

While Shields is still a few years away from making the majors, Pipeline currently has his ETA as 2029; he has a lot of potential. With proper development, Royals fans could see him sooner and watch him turn into the next top-of-the-rotation arm for Kansas City
