Carter Jensen's record-breaking Royals rookie season is flying under the radar

After being a top prospect in the Kansas City Royals’ minor league system for years, Carter Jensen had a decent amount of hype to live up to this season. After accumulating 3.4 fWAR through his first 141 games, it’s safe to say that the hype was completely justified.

For added measure, Jensen also broke a Royals’ rookie record that was set by the current face of the franchise, Bobby Witt Jr. Unfortunately, not many people know just how good Jensen has been in 2026. 

Unless you’re an avid fan of the Royals, Jensen’s under-the-radar season is somewhat understandable. After getting off to a rocky start to begin the season, the team was never really a threat to make the playoffs, so they didn't have too many eyes on them. That doesn’t make his performance any less impressive. But it is a little disappointing that more people won’t be able to appreciate what Jensen has done in 2026.  

During the Royals’ September 15 matchup against the Houston Astros, Jensen smacked a double to left field off of starting pitcher Hunter Brown. It became Jensen’s 58th extra-base hit of the season. That double broke a franchise rookie record previously set by Witt in 2022, when he collected 57 extra-base hits on his way to finishing fourth in the voting for Rookie of the Year. 

Much like his teammate four years ago, Jensen likely won’t receive any first-place votes this go around either. Despite this, he ranks in the top five of all rookies in home runs, doubles, and RBI. And when you account for the fact that Jensen has done this catching around 100 games this season, it makes his season all the more impressive. 

Carter Jensen’s breakout season should give Royals’ fans hope about the future of the club 

While his .232/.219/.453 slash line won’t win Jensen any awards this season, it lays down a solid foundation to build off of in the future. That’s not to say that he hasn’t had his peaks and valleys throughout the season. He posted a lackluster .580 OPS in May. In 81 at-bats, he managed to hit just one home run while striking out 26 times.  

What stands out is the fact that Jensen has routinely made the correct adjustments at the plate in 2026. That has put him in a position to continually improve. He bounced back in June in a big way, boasting a .860 OPS while adding 5 home runs and 20 RBI. Although breaking franchise records is always an impressive feat, it's the players that know how to stay at the top of their game that stick around the longest.    

Because of those adjustments, Jensen has never looked too overmatched by MLB pitching this season. Even at his low points, he put in the work to find his stroke. At just 23 years old, the rookie catcher is already barreling up baseballs at an above-average clip in the league. And his 91.3 average exit velocity puts him above three-quarters of all MLB hitters.

With Witt and Jac Caglianone alongside Jensen, the Royals have a very solid core of young players to remain competitive in a fairly weak AL Central for the foreseeable future. If the team is able to land any number of free agent pitchers in the off-season, 2027 could be a surprise year for the Royals. It could also be a year that puts Jensen on everybody’s radar.
