Kansas City Royals Get Excellent Start from Kris Medlen

Having into tonight’s game, the Kansas City Royals had won just two of their past ten games. September, which was seemingly destined to be a victory lap for the Royals before their run through October, has been a nightmare. They have needed something to bring back that swagger and spark their flagging confidence. Well, tonight, Kris Medlen and Alex Rios may have done just that, guiding the Royals to a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

The Royals got on the board in the top of the second. Eric Hosmer singled to lead off the inning, but was erased on a double play. Mike Moustakas followed with a double, and moved to third on a wild pitch. Salvador Perez followed with a base hit to center, plating Moustakas to give the Royals their first run of the game.

Kansas City had only one other hit the rest of the night, but they made it count. Alex Rios drilled a home run down the left field line, leading the Indians pyrotechnics crew to set off some fireworks. Yes, it has been that kind of year for the Tribe where they have to celebrate another team’s success.

That was more than enough run support for Medlen. He held the Indians in check, not allowing a runner past second after a first inning jam. He did leave with runners on first and second and one out in the seventh, but Ryan Madson struck out both batters he faced to end the threat. Overall, Medlen allowed five hits and a walk over his 6.1 shutout innings.

Greg Holland made things interesting in the ninth, allowing a walk and a base hit before working out of the jam to close out the Kansas City Royals 2-0 victory. While it may not have been pretty, this type of victory may be exactly what the Royals needed to get off their recent skid and propel themselves forward once more.
