The KC Royals will soon be one step closer to getting their All-Star left fielder back in the lineup. According to Andy McCullough, Alex Gordon will be starting his rehab assignment on Sunday, as he will suit up with the Omaha Storm Chasers.

For the Royals, the timing of this rehab assignment may be as close to perfect as they could have hoped. With a few games in the minors, Gordon could be ready to return to Kansas City around the initially anticipated time frame of the beginning of September. This way, Gordon would have approximately a month worth of action to get ready for the postseason.

Alex Gordon’s return would also have a trickle down affect on the KC Royals lineup. With Ben Zobrist currently riding a truly torrid stretch, either Omar Infante or Alex Rios are likely to be sent to the bench. The Royals lineup, which has been performing quite well lately, would suddenly get that much better.

Of course, it is fair to wonder what type of player the Royals will get back once Gordon is ready to return. While the rehab assignment can help to get his timing back, it is unlikely that he would be able to pick up where he left off, as Gordon had posted a .385/.484/.654 batting line with two home runs in his 31 plate appearances in July. After a few struggles during the first half, Gordon appeared to have finally gotten back on track when the injury occurred.

Yet, even if Gordon is not truly back to that level when he returns, his very presence in the lineup should pay dividends. there would be yet another power threat, putting additional pressure on the opposing starter. More importantly, the Royals would have his platinum glove back in left field, helping the pitching staff as they build momentum for October.

The KC Royals appear as though they will get an important piece of the lineup back soon, as Alex Gordon is going to begin his rehab assignment on Sunday. Hopefully, he will avoid any setbacks and be ready to patrol left in Kauffman Stadium shortly.
