Kansas City Royals Still Leading All Star Votes

After the second vote tabulations, the Kansas City Royals retain five starting positions for the Midsummer Classic. Salvador Perez, our beloved backstop, remains the top vote-getter in the AL, receiving 2,681,063 votes and amassing a significant lead over the A’s Steven Vogt. Mike Moustakas maintains his lead at Third Base, with the third most votes in the AL, and Alcides Escobar has compiled a significant lead at Short Stop. Rounding out the Royals representation, Lorenzo Cain, the second highest vote-getter in the AL, and Alex Gordon both hold starting spots, beside Mike Trout, in the outfield.

The excellent news this week is that Eric Hosmer, the Gold Glove first baseman, is gaining on fan-favorite Miguel Cabrera for the nod at first. At last week’s tabulations, Cabrera led Hosmer by 245, 613 votes. This week, the margin has narrowed to 70, 515. It’s amazing the difference a week can make! Though, Cabrera is always a tough out, Hosmer has a legitimate shot at taking over the starting spot for his first All Star game.

Kendrys Morales also remains in the mix at DH, having gained some ground on Nelson Cruz, but he still remains about 280,000 votes behind after the second week’s tallies. Regardless of if Morales can catch Cruz for the DH spot, the Royals are now on the cusp of potentially sending six players to Cincinnati to represent the American League in the Midsummer Classic. Considering the number of years the Royals only sent one player, by default, to the All Star game, this represents a remarkable turn around and, perhaps, an expression of how the Royals might be America’s Team.

Through some due diligence, a Royal All Star Game seems completely possible. There may be some debate as to how deserving the Royals are of such tremendous accolades, but I can’t see a strong case against any of the Royals’ potential starters when you consider their total contribution: offense, defense, and being just all around amazing guys. Further, it could be an all-Royals squad fighting for home-field advantage in a World Series of which they might be a part. The Royals are being recognized for the great players they are, and it is up to each of us, the loyal fans, to ensure the nation gets to see exactly how great these guys are and how much we love them.

Voting ends July 2nd, so please vote early and vote often to help Hosmer get in and to keep Perez, Cain, Gordon, Escobar, and Moustakas in their current positions. Together, we can help make this the greatest Midsummer Classic in Royals history as well as, I hope, the greatest season in Royals history.
