KC Royals April 22nd Minors Recap

The KC Royals minor league teams all played afternoon games on Wednesday.

Let’s start with Omaha, who lost to Memphis, 7-2. The two teams finish their series on Thursday night.

With the Storm Chasers up 2-0, the Redbirds put up a five-spot in the top of the sixth. They hit two triples in the inning off reliever Buddy Baumann. The first came with the bases loaded and from the first batter Baumann faced. The second came three batters later with two men on base.

Christian Binford took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks over 5.1 innings. All three runs scored after he was pulled. Casey Coleman then allowed two runs on a hit and three walks over 2.1 innings while striking out three. Louis Coleman entered in the ninth and escaped the jam.

Centerfielder Brett Eibner was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the sixth by Casey Kotchman (0-for-2). Eibner left with the trainer and had both triples hit in his direction.

The Storm Chasers collected just four hits, including a double by

Whit Merrifield

. He also walked and scored a run. Merrifield extended his hitting streak to seven games and upped his batting average to .275.

NW Arkansas enjoyed the day off before heading to Tulsa for four games over the weekend.

Wilmington salvaged the series finale with Potomac, winning 6-3. The Blue Rocks now head to Frederick for four games over the weekend.

The Blue Rocks were down 3-0 before putting up a five-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Jack Lopez walked with the bases loaded and Bubba Starling followed with a bases clearing double (one of his two hits). He came around to score on a sac fly.

Ramon Torres, Dominique Taylor, and Daniel Rockett each had two hits. Taylor tripled, scored a run, and stole a base.

Blue Rocks starter Alec Mills struggled with his command and lasted just four innings (one run on seven hits and two walks). Nick Green earned the victory, allowing two runs on two hits over three innings (a two-run home run in the fifth) He struck out three and retired the final eight batters he faced after the homer. Robinson Yambati earned his fourth save, getting out of an inherited bases loaded jam in the eighth and his own bases loaded jam in the ninth.

Lexington sat through an hour plus rain delay and then were swept by visiting Greenville, losing 7-3 in the finale. The Legends now head to West Virginia for four games over the weekend.

The Drive scored five unearned runs against losing pitcher Emilio Ogando over the final 3.1 innings (three errors). That was after Nik Stephenson was solid over the first 5.2 innings (two runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts).

On offense, leadoff hitter Carlos Garcia went 2-for-5 with a stolen base. However, he committed two errors at third base. Elier Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a double and a two-run home run in the second that gave the Legends the lead.
