Triple Play Podcast: Jarrod Dyson, Devin Mesoraco, Robbie Ross

Major baseball news has been tough to come by recently, so this week’s Triple Play Podcast focuses on a handful of some smaller transactions. We started the show off mentioning the Royals’ agreement with Jarrod Dyson to avoid arbitration, keeping the perfect 4th outfielder on the team’s bench for another reasonable salary.

In other news, Devin Mesoraco signed a four-year extension with the Reds that will pay him a guaranteed $28 million following his breakout 2014 season. Once again, the Salvador Perez contract looks downright criminal.

Casey Janssen signed a deal with the Nationals, which makes that team’s only potential weakness look like much less of a weakness. We also talked about another solid reliever, Neal Cotts, who was signed by the Brewers.

For much of the offseason, the White Sox have made smart moves that greatly improved their team. Then they signed Gordon Beckham and designated Dayan Viciedo for assignment. The latter wouldn’t be as surprising had they not agreed to pay him $4.4 million for 2015 just a couple of months ago, but it was just an odd move considering they have seen what Beckham does, up close and personal.

We wrapped up the show with a brief discussion on the trade that sent Robbie Ross to Boston in exchange for Anthony Ranaudo. Ross has been a very good reliever for the Rangers, while Ranaudo hadn’t reached his potential for the Red Sox. It’s a fascinating trade.
