Brandon Finnegan’s Already Historic Season

What were you doing back when you were 21 years old? If you were anything like me, it probably involved a lot of bad decisions and alcohol, as may well have been the case for most 21 year olds. However, Brandon Finnegan is not like every other 21 year old out there. Instead of spending most of his time at the ol’ pub and consuming pints like he was the reincarnation of Old Hoss Radbourn, Finnegan has been busy making history for the Kansas City Royals.

Earlier in the year, Finnegan, as we all know, was pitching in the College World Series for Texas Christian University. Unfortunately, TCU fell short of their goal of winning the World Series, but Finnegan produced a strong season, going 9-3 with 2.04 ERA and 134 strikeouts. That performance was enough to have the Royals draft him 17th overall this season.

Brandon Finnegan continued his stellar performance on entering the professional ranks, rocketing through the minors before finding his way on the Royals roster in September. There, he posted a 1.29 ERA and 10 strikeouts in seven innings, as the major league spotlight did not prove to be too much for him.

  • Finnegan continued to perform well in the first three rounds of the postseason, as he may well be responsible for the Royals getting through the Wild Card round. If not for his excellent 2.1 innings against the Oakland A’s, the Royals may be home watching this World Series from the same vantage point as the rest of us. Instead, Finnegan proved to be more than ready for the playoffs, and has made himself a vital part of Ned Yost‘s bullpen.

The Year of Brandon Finnegan continued last night. Kelvin Herrera had his issues after coming in to relieve Jeremy Guthrie, and Yost once again turned to the rookie. As he became the first player to appear in the College World Series and the MLB World Series in the same year, Finnegan continued to reward Yost’s faith in him, getting two vital outs to preserve the Royals one run lead.

Brandon Finnegan has been on a role this year, and it may not end until the World Series finishes. This already historic season may well be a sign of great things to come.
