The Kansas City Royals Have History on Their Side

Baseball is a game deeply rooted in history. More than any other sport, baseball lives and breaths that history, as it is difficult not to invoke the ghosts of history while watching the players of today. History also has an interesting way of repeating itself in baseball, especially in a playoff series, as it is exceedingly rare for teams to make historical comebacks. Right now, the Kansas City Royals would appear to have history on their side.

The Royals currently hold a 2-0 lead in their series with the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the 25th team to hold such an advantage in a League Championship Series. Of those 24 teams that found themselves in such a deficit, only three teams have come back to win the series, including the 1985 Royals. However, none of those teams had lost the first two games at home and went on to complete the comeback.

While this is not a seemingly insurmountable task, the writing may well be on the wall for the Orioles. They are already talking as though this series is over, as the Royals constant pressure on offense appears to be in their heads. Buck Showalter even admitted as such, saying that the Orioles have to expend so much energy mentally and physically to even tie the games that they are unable to get beyond that point.

So what does this all mean for the Kansas City Royals? It means that they are presently in the driver’s seat, and simply need to take care of business at Kauffman Stadium. The Orioles already sound as though they are preparing their concession speech, much like a politician that sees the writing on the wall although all the ballots have not yet come through.

There is still a lot of baseball to be played. Teams have come back from losing the first two games to win their series. The Boston Red Sox even managed to come back from having lost their first three games and being behind in the fourth with the great Mariano Rivera on the mound before erasing that deficit. However, none of those teams had the defeated tone that the Orioles have.

The Kansas City Royals are back amongst baseball royalty this season. It may well be that the coronation happens at Kauffman Stadium in the next few days.
