After last night’s 13-inning victory, in which the Royals used 5 relievers, the team thought they may need some bullpen reinforcements. To solve this problem, the Royals have recalled Michael Mariot from Omaha. To make room on the roster, Francisco Pena has been optioned back to the Storm Chasers.

Mariot has already accumulated 10.2 innings with the big league club so far, striking out 9 and walking 6, while allowing 10 hits and 7 runs. At the Triple-A level, he’s struck out 13 batters in 9.2 innings this season.

As for Pena, he only appeared in 1 game during his short stay with the Royals, and he did not get a plate appearance. He did, however, earn a big league paycheck for a few days, so it’s not all bad for him. He also has a caught stealing percentage of 100% right now, which is nice. He’ll return to the minors, where he’s shown quite a bit of power this season, clubbing 9 home runs in 30 games.

In other news, due to Danny Valencia‘s wrist injury – thankfully, it’s not broken, only sprained – the Royals will have a bench consisting of Nori Aoki and Brett Hayes today, as Lorenzo Cain is getting the start in right field, with Jarrod Dyson in center. Jimmy Paredes will be at third base.

I’m guessing when they were building this squad, the team didn’t picture having Pedro Ciriaco, Jimmy Paredes, and Jarrod Dyson in the lineup all on the same day. Hopefully this is just a one-game occurrence, of course. Omar Infante may be ready to return from his rehab assignment when the team gets back to Kansas City tomorrow, and if Valencia needs a trip to the disabled list, another move could be made. I wonder if the Storm Chasers have any third basemen they could spare?
