Series Preview – Royals (75-68) @ Indians (76-66)


With little margin of error the rest of the season the Royals roll into Cleveland to take on the Indians for a three game series. Kansas City has a chance to make a dent into the Wildcard deficit and even the AL Central standings with six games at Progressive Field then in Detroit.

Series Preview –

Over the weekend the boys in blue took two of three from the Tigers which didn’t look possible after losing 16-2 with James Shields on the mound. Cleveland also comes into this series having taken two of three against the Mets winning on Friday and Saturday before losing yesterday.

Franchise Series History –

This is Kansas City’s last trip to Cleveland in 2013 and the Royals have lost five of six of those meetings. Overall KC is 293-311 against the Indians, 136-168 in Cleveland and 63-94 at Progressive Field.

Probable Pitching Matchups –

Monday, September 9 (6:05 pm): Ervin Santana (8-8, 3.33) v. Ubaldo Jimenez (10-9, 3.79)
– The “Magic Man” is 4-2 against AL Central foes this season with a 1.99 ERA, holding opponents to a .188 batting average
– While 1-0 against Cleveland this season for his career Santana is 3-8 in 16 games against the Indians with 11 quality starts
Tuesday, September 10 (6:05 pm): Jeremy Guthrie (13-10, 4.19) v. Zach McAllister (7-8, 3.97)
– Guthrie has back-to-back no decisions at Toronto and against Seattle in his last two starts
– Versus one of his former teams the Tribe he’s 1-1 with a ND
Wednesday, September 11 (11:05 am): James Shields (10-9, 3.43) v. Scott Kazmir (8-7, 4.17)
– Prior to going just 3.2 innings allowing 10 runs on 14 hits, Shields hadn’t lost since August 6 vs Minnesota which he was 4-0 plus a ND
– He’s yet to get a decision against Cleveland this season in three starts, KC is 2-1 when he starts against the Indians

2013 Results –  

The two teams haven’t met since July just before the All-Star Game break in which the Indians swept the Royals. Prior to that series the teams were tied at five wins apiece but now Cleveland owns a three game lead in the season series with six to play. In that last series the Tribe won by scores of 3-0, 5-3 and 6-4 with Tim Collins taking the loss in two of the three losses. KC has lost five of six games at Progressive Field in 2013.

TV/Radio –

Fox Sports Kansas City will broadcast Monday and Tuesday night’s games with Wednesday’s 11:05 am first pitch not being on TV. Steve Physioc and Rex Hudler will handle the TV side this series with Joel Goldberg and Royals Hall of Famer Jeff Montgomery hosting Royals Live pre and postgame. 610 Sports Radio/KCSP will have each game with Ryan Lefebvre and Steve Stewart describing the action on the Royals Radio Network.
