Prior to today’s home opener, Jose Guillen was placed on the 15-day DL with a partial tear of the right hip flexor. He is expected to return after the 15 days.
Guillen being DL’d kept the Royals from having to cut a player to make room for Sidney Ponson on the active roster. Essentially Guillen’s injury has briefly extended the tenure of either Brayan Pena or Tony Pena Jr.
I say briefly because Jose being on the shelf means that the Royals are going to have to bring up another outfielder to the ML roster to take his place since they were already lacking a true backup OF. Outside of Guillen, DeJesus, and Crisp the only OF options they have on their current roster are “2B” Mark Teahen and career utility player Willie Bloomquist who is much more a utility infielder than outfielder.
Guillen’s injury likely means Teahen will be heading out to RF and Alberto Callaspo will take over as the starter at 2B.
If I am the GM of the Royals right now, Mitch Maier is already on his way to Kansas City and either Pena, don’t care which one, is on his way out.
