The Royals finished the week with a 2-3 record.  They ended spring training 18-14 which was good for a 4th place finish in the Cactus League.

Zack Greinke pitched Friday against the Texas Rangers.  In 5.0 innings he allowed 6 hits, 4 runs, 2 walks and struck out 7.  For the spring Zack had a 9.21 ERA, 1.98 WHIP and 3.00 SO/BB in 28.1 IP.  His ERA and WHIP were alarming, but his SO/BB ratio was outstanding.  I have no doubt he will be on his game in his 1st start Wednesday against the White Sox.

Gil Meche pitched Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies.  In 4.0 IP he allowed 3 H, 1 ER, 4 BB and recorded 2 SO.  For the spring Meche had a 5.48 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 1.50 SO/BB in 21.1 IP.  His overall spring numbers are not very good, but after a rough start he closed spring training with several solid starts.  It doesn’t seem like he has a good feel for his control yet so he might not be dominating tomorrow against the White Sox, but he should at least keep the Royals in the game.

Kyle Davies pitched Saturday against the Texas Rangers capping off an excellent spring.  In 4.0 innings he allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and struck out 2.  For the spring Kyle had a 3.82 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 1.58 SO/BB in 30.2 IP.  Davies was the only Royals starter to allow less than 1 hit per inning pitched this spring.  I declared that Davies was Robin to Greinke’s Batman and I’m sticking to that.  He easily wins the team Cy Young award for the spring.

Horacio Ramirez pitched Thursday against the Texas Rangers capping off a run of spring starts that ranged from mediocre to terrible.  In 6.0 IP he allowed 9 H, 6 ER, 1 BB and recorded 3 SO.  For the spring Ho-Ram had a 9.00 ERA, 1.96 WHIP and 1.80 SO/BB in 25.0 IP.  At no point this spring did Ho-Ram do anything to earn a spot in the starting rotation, yet that is exactly what the Royals gave him.  Unlike Meche, Greinke and Davies, Ho-Ram failed to show any ability to miss bats and get a key SO when he needed one.  He tallied only 9 punch outs in his 25 spring innings.  I still list him 4th in my rotation even though the Royals have named him the 5th starter.

Sir Sidney Ponson pitched Tuesday against the Oakland Athletics and quickly proved that ML spring competition is tougher than what he faced in the WBC.  In 5.0 innings he allowed 7 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks and struck out 2.  For the spring Ponson had a 9.58 ERA, 1.84 WHIP and 1.00 SO/BB in 10.1 IP.  I undersold him last week by saying he is not very good.  What I should have said is Sidney Ponson is terrible.  Royals’ fans everywhere are hoping for a second game to get postponed against the White Sox so we don’t have to see him pitch in the home opener on Friday.  I’d rather see Bannister on the ML team. At least he is a good guy that you can root for.

Week 1: ERA of 4.15 with a WHIP of 1.77 in 13.0 innings
Week 2: ERA of 4.50 with a WHIP of 1.23 in 26.0 innings
Week 3: ERA of 6.67 with a WHIP of 1.85 in 29.2 innings
Week 4: ERA of 10.57 with a WHIP of 2.43 in 23.0 innings
Week 5: ERA of 6.30 with a WHIP of 1.50 in 30.0 innings
