Ryan Shealy Sent to Triple-A Omaha

Ryan Shealy cleared waivers so the Royals were able to send him to Triple-A Omaha to start the season.  Shealy was hitting .262/.373/.571 with 4 home runs this spring in 42 at bats.  In 538 major league at bats Shealy has hit 19 home runs with a line of .271/.335/.429.  Offensively and defensively he has value as a league average major league player at 1B.  I am pleasantly surprised that he was not claimed by another team, and am glad he will still be an option for the major league club in the event of injury to either Butler or Jacobs.  As long as I don’t have to suffer through Ross Gload starting at 1B I’m happy.  But make no mistake, Butler and Jacobs are probably the worst defensive combo at the position in all of MLB.  I fully expect Trey Hillman to use Willie Bloomquist as a late inning defensive replacement which will probably make me a little sick to my stomach, but it is still an improvement over Ross Gload.

In other news, Joel Peralta cleared waivers and is now a free agent.  I hope the Royals are paying attention that both Shealy and Peralta have cleared waivers and were not claimed by another team.  If they put two and two together they should come to the conclusion that if they release TPJ he will also clear waivers.  I am assuming the only reason he is still around at this point is because they, for some inexplicable reason, are afraid of losing him.  That or he is going to make the team which will literally make me cry.
