Pitching Perspectives (3/24-3/30)

The Royals finished the week with a 3-2-1 record.

Zack Greinke pitched Tuesday against Oakland and Sunday against Seattle.  His start against the Athletics was a solid outing.  In 5.0 IP he allowed 4 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB and recorded 8 SO.  His start against the Mariners was another disaster.  In 2.0 IP he allowed 10 H, 8 ER, 1 BB and recorded 1 SO. His spring ERA is now up to 9.64.

Gil Meche pitched Friday against Los Angeles and had an excellent start.  In 7.0 IP he allowed 4 H, 0 ER, 1 BB and recorded 6 SO.  His spring ERA is now down to 6.23.

Kyle Davies pitched Monday against the Chicago Cubs.  In 5.2 innings he allowed 8 hits, 4 runs and 1 walk while striking out 3.  His spring ERA has climbed to 3.71 but it is still at a perfectly acceptable level.  I’m really excited to see Davies pitch in the regular season.

Luke Hochevar did not pitch with the major league team this week and was optioned to AAA today.

Horacio Ramirez pitched Saturday against Texas.  In 5.0 IP he allowed 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 0 BB, 1 HR and struck out 1.  His spring ERA is now 9.00.

Sir Sidney Ponson made his Royals spring training debut Thursday against Seattle.  In 5.1 innings he allowed 8 hits, 6 runs, 4 earned runs, 2 walks, 1 home run and struck out 1.  The Royals quickly learned what many other teams have learned before them.  Buyer beware, Punch-Out Ponson is simply not very good.

Brian Bannister did not pitch with the major league team for the second week in a row.

Week 1: ERA of 4.15 with a WHIP of 1.77 in 13.0 innings
Week 2: ERA of 4.50 with a WHIP of 1.23 in 26.0 innings
Week 3: ERA of 6.67 with a WHIP of 1.85 in 29.2 innings
Week 4: ERA of 10.57 with a WHIP of 2.43 in 23.0 innings
