It took him over a month, but Gil Meche finally had a good spring training start. Pitching against the Dodgers today, Meche threw 7.0 innings allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6. Even more encouraging is the fact that he was facing LA’s projected opening day lineup. And yes, Manny was being Manny accounting for 3 of the Dodgers 5 hits on the day.
Whether spring training stats mean anything or not, Meche’s start makes me feel a lot better about things. After the Royals starting rotation put up a 10.57 ERA and a 2.43 WHIP in 23.0 IP last week and after signing Sir Sidney I was really starting to worry. Baseball is very much a mental game, not only for the players but for the fans as well. So chalk this start up as a case of the warm fuzzies for me!
Joakim Soria followed Meche and threw a clean inning. Then Robinson Tejeda came in to do what he does best. In his 1 inning of work he allowed 1 H, 2 BB and 1 ER but also recorded 3 strike outs. If Tejeda could ever learn some control he could really be a fantastic pitcher.
A final fun fact, after going 2-3 again today, Mike Aviles is 6-9 with 10 RBI in his last 3 and 9-15 in his last 5.
