- Royals reassigned non-roster invitees LHP-Lenny DiNardo, RHP-Victor Marte, RHP-Anthony Larew and C-Matt Tupman to their minor league camp. None of these moves are a surprise. The three pitchers combined to pitch 8.2 innning, while Tupman played in only 5 games and got 3 at bats.
- Sir Sidney Ponson started for the Royals today and had the expected result. His line was a not so stellar 5.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO, 1 HR. Even if he had thrown a no hitter I wouldn’t change my opinion that he does not belong on the Royals ML roster. He was pitching well last year 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA when the Rangers cut him because of his personality issues. Not a shock since the guy punched a judge in Aruba.
- When Dayton Moore became the Royals GM, he talked about the importance of having a team full of guys with character. Since that statement he has now signed Jose Guillen, Kyle Farnsworth, and Sidney Ponson. He traded for Alberto Callaspo, and tried to trade for Milton Bradley. I am a big fan of meaning what you say and sticking to your beliefs so I have progressively lost more and more respect for Dayton Moore as he has made each of these moves. If you don’t believe in having high character guys, then don’t say that you do. I’m fine with these moves, to varying degrees, but I am not fine that they are in opposition of one of his main principles he laid out when he took the job.
- Spring training numbers don’t mean a whole lot, but as a Royals fan you have to be encouraged with the offensive output of the players who project to get a majority of the at bats this season. The only player hitting under .300 that is a lock to get a lot of playing time is Jose Guillen. Last season only 2 Royals with over 300 at bats hit .300 or better and those two players were DeJesus and Aviles. It is looking like Seitzer is going to have a hand in increasing that number this season. I realize it is a long season, but is it too early to give Seitz a raise?
