KC Royals Lose 6-5 as Edinson Volquez Struggles

The KC Royals jumped on the Astros early, but with Edinson Volquez struggling, failed to hold the lead, falling to Houston 6-5.

Astros starter Vincent Velasquez got two quick outs to start the game before Lorenzo Cain tripled to center and Kendrys Morales homered to left-center on back-to-back pitches, giving the Royals an early 2-0 lead.

KC Royals starter Edinson Volquez got himself into some quick trouble in the bottom half of the inning, giving up back to back singles to lead off the inning.

However, he retired the next three, two via strikeout, to get out of the inning unscathed.

The KC Royals added another run in the second, as Alex Gordon singled, advanced to 2nd on a wild pitch, and scored on a Alex Rios single.

After giving up two hits in the 1st, Volquez retired 10 of the next 11 Astros, before giving up a solo homer to Chris Carter in the bottom of the 4th.

Three batters later, Marwin Gonzalez homered to right, making it a 3-2 game in the bottom of the 5th.

Following the home run, the next four Astros reached, the last two being RBI singles by Jose Altuve and Evan Gattis, giving the Astros a 5-3 lead.

The KC Royals then tied it back up the the top of the 7th with a two-out, RBI triple from Jarrod Dyson, scoring Salvador Perez and Alex Rios.

However, Kelvin Herrera hit Altuve to lead of the bottom half of the inning, and following a Luis Valbuena walk, scored on a Chris Carter fielders choice, giving the Astros a 6-5 lead.

The call was reviewed but was upheld.

The Royals went quietly in the 9th, tagging Kansas City with their third straight loss.
