Kansas City Royals, Salvador Perez Could Discuss Extension Soon

The Kansas City Royals have one of the greatest bargains in the game when it comes to Salvador Perez. Perez, a two time All-Star and a Gold Glove catcher, is currently locked up through the 2016 season, as he is in the midst of a five year contract worth $7 Million. Add in his three team option years, worth another $14.75 Million through the 2019 season, and it is easy to see why Perez is considered such a bargain.

Naturally, as with any players that outperform their contract, there is the desire to get compensated according to their production. Perez is no different. After all, despite that howitzer attached to his right shoulder, Perez is only human.

While the Royals previously mentioned being inclined speak with Perez’ agents in regards to another contract extension, it was expected that doing so would be lower on their list of priorities. After all, Dayton Moore does have Alex Gordon‘s impending free agency, and the possibility of needing to lock in players like Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer to long term extensions first. Perez, and his comically under priced contract, may not seem overly important in comparison.

However, that does not seem to be the case at all. According to Jon Heyman, the Kansas City Royals front office commiserates with Perez over his contract, and are willing to work out another extension to keep him in Kansas City. Perez, for his part, wants to remain with the Royals and is hoping to be an embodiment of the slogan for the 2015 season – Forever Royal.

Even though the Royals do not have an actual need to engage Perez in another extension at this point, doing so may be the correct plan of action. Not only would Perez be able to work out a contract more favorable to his performance, but it would generate quite a bit of goodwill, not only with Perez, but with the other players. It would then be known that the Royals will, if a player outperforms his extension, look to make things right financially.

Over the next few seasons, the Royals will have quite a few players approaching free agency. While they may not be able to sign each piece, extending Perez again may actually help the Royals keep a few of those key players. With the understanding that the front office and ownership will take care of those players if they prove to be incredible bargains, the Royals may actually have an easier time keeping their young nucleus than would normally be the case.

Salvador Perez may well be the leader of the Kansas City Royals. If he signs another extension, he may also be a catalyst to keeping the core of the current squad in place.
