Royals weekly winter league recap

It was a short and somewhat quiet week when talking about the KC Royals in winter ball. The winter league teams are now set for the Caribbean Series, which begins this afternoon in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Santurce won the Puerto Rican League Championship on January 27th, winning the best-of-seven series over Mauaguez four games to two.

Santurce won the deciding game 5-3, with four runs scoring in the bottom of the eighth.

Reymond Fuentes once again started that game in centerfield and batted sixth. He went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk. He committed a throwing error (which did not cost Santurce a run) and in the same inning, threw a runner out at the plate to end that inning. Fuentes was however ejected, after he was thrown out trying to score in the bottom of the eight on a double (his out ended the inning).

On January 28th, Caribes was crowned Venezuelan Winter League champion, as they won the best-of-seven series over Magallanes four games to one.

Caribes won the clincher 8-3.

Though Balbino Fuenmayor did not play in the clincher, he did play in Caribes’ only loss of the series on January 26th. He went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in that game.

I mentioned that the Caribbean Series is all set, with the four Caribbean League champions and Cuba among the teams to play in the round robin format. Culican will represent Mexico, Gigantes will represent the Dominican Republic, Santurce will represent Puerto Rico, and Caribes will represent Venezuela.
