Typically, the best selling jerseys for a team belong to the superstar, the fan favorite or the young kid that the hopes and dreams of a franchise are built around. Sometimes, two of those categories can match, with all three being hit by the same player on rare occasions. That has certainly been the case with the Kansas City Royals, with Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer typically driving jersey sales.

However, this offseason, a new face has emerged as the top selling jersey for the Royals. Lorenzo Cain, he of the weekly highlight reel catch, has supplanted both Gordon and Hosmer, taking over as the hottest selling jersey as we head into 2015.

There are plenty of reasons as to why Cain would have taken that spot. His aforementioned highlight reel catches, making him a walking Web Gem. His postseason performance, when he was the MVP of the ALCS with a .533/.588/.667 batting line. In fact, his regular season numbers, when Cain produced a .301/.339/.412 batting line, stealing 28 bases and playing incredible defense, could be a part of the reason.

  • Perhaps the best reason to snag that Lorenzo Cain jersey is that he is just scratching the surface of this potential. After all, Cain did not even begin playing baseball until his sophomore year of high school – he did not even own a baseball glove at the time. One could say that he is still learning the game, and that he is making these plays partially on his athleticism alone.

Even if that is the case, it does not matter. Cain has performed well enough, and still has enough room to grown, where he could be a solid extension candidate. As he continues learning the game and continues to develop, that 2014 season could be the springboard for a great future.

Lorenzo Cain is currently the best selling jersey for the Royals. Since he may just be hitting his stride as a player, that may not change any time soon.
