Royals Receiving Calls for Wade Davis and Greg Holland

When the Kansas City Royals resigned Luke Hochevar and Jason Frasor, it signaled one of two possibilities. The first possibility was that the Royals had decided to attempt to take every game to five innings, treating each game as they did in the World Series and letting a truly spectacular bullpen take over. The second, and much more likely scenario, involved trading one of the pieces from the back end of their bullpen.

It seems that the latter scenario may be on the periphery of the Royals thinking. According to Ken Rosenthal, the Royals are receiving interest in both Wade Davis and Greg Holland. The prevailing thought is, that given the dearth of proven closers and top relievers available now that Andrew Miller signed and David Robertson may be about to come off the board, the Royals could trade one of the two for the bat they need.

The Royals are certainly in a strong place when it comes to exploiting a market deficiency. Unfortunately, the power bat that the Royals are felt to need is also something that no longer grows on trees in this era of baseball. As such, they may not get the type of player that would, at first glance or via name recognition, appear to be the desperately needed upgrade.

However, if the Royals truly are willing to trade one of Davis or Holland, they may find themselves capable of getting a solid bat. Since Kauffman Stadium does not lend itself to the 40 home run hitting type of player, the Royals may be able to receive someone capable of hitting 20 to 25 home runs and a solid amount of doubles for either of their dominant relievers.

While losing either Wade Davis or Greg Holland would be a step back in the Royals bullpen, they have certainly amassed the depth to make such a move. Hochevar, as Hunter so eloquently stated, was Wade Davis before Wade Davis was Wade Davis. If the Royals do decide to move Davis, and Hochevar can step in and recapture his 2013 magic, then the Royals bullpen may not miss a beat.

It seems likely that one of Wade Davis or Greg Holland could be traded. If so, hopefully they can bring back that bat the Royals need.
