As it Should Be: Zack and Felix 1 & 2 in AL Cy Young Voting

facebooktwitterreddit

Zack Greinke has officially won the 2009 AL Cy Young Award.

The voters did the right thing by giving the award to Zack, but they did an even better job by voting Felix 2nd.  In a bit of a surprise, Justin Verlander took 3rd over C.C. Sabathia, who finished 4th, and Roy Halladay who was 5th.

Greinke took home 25 of the 28 1st place votes as the voters sent a clear message.  A message we were all well aware of in Kansas City.  Zack Greinke was the best pitcher in the AL, and all of baseball, in 2009.

Zack Greinke:  134 points (25 1st and 3 2nd place votes)
Felix Hernandez:  80 points (2 1st, 25 2nd, and 1 3rd)
Justin Verlander:  14 points (1 1st and 9 3rd)
C.C. Sabathia:  13 points (2 2nd and 7 3rd)
Roy Halladay:  11 points (11 3rd)

All 28 ballots included votes for both Zack and Felix.  I could nitpick on some things, like the fact someone was so delusional that they thought Verlander’s season was superior to both Greinke and King Felix, but I won’t.  Well at least not beyond that last sentence.  As a whole, I think the voters did an amazing job.

Congratulations Zack!
