Cleveland and Kansas City match up for their fourth series of the season. The Royals are 4-5 overall, winning the last two series after dumping the dreadful home opening series.

To get an update on the Tribe, I exchanged some questions with Lewie Pollis, the editor of Wahoo’s On First, FanSided’s Cleveland Indians site:

The Indians are in that awkward spot where they’re close enough to make a move and try to hang in the race, but could also read the writing on the wall and start selling. What do you want them to do?

The best trade the Indians could make right now would be one that improves their chances of winning now but is also focused on 2013 and 2014. Just based on the state of the roster and the high demand for premium closers, it would make a lot of sense to trade Chris Perez for a young, cost-controlled outfielder or first baseman (my first choice is Peter Bourjos).

We don’t have any desirable spare parts whose losses wouldn’t haunt us next year and we’re not really in a position to make a big upgrade. So really it’s more a matter of finding a team whose strengths and weaknesses match up with ours than of “buying” or “selling.”

There had been rumors of Justin Masterson being on the block as well as Chris Perez and even Shin Soo-Choo. What return would the Indians be after to reload the system’s talent pool?

For Perez, it would be a young, cost-controlled hitter who we can plug into our lineup right now. I don’t have a specific deal in mind for Choo or Masterson, but I would demand a package of high-ceiling MLB-ready impact talent. Even if we’re punting 2012, we’re still supposed to contend in 2013; it’s hard to imagine us making a serious run at the playoffs without our ace, and even if Choo wasn’t a star (which he is) we have no one else who can play right field every day.

Perez? If you can find a good deal, go ahead and pull the trigger. Vinnie Pestano can step in for the ninth inning. But selling off guys like Choo and Masterson doesn’t make sense. Unless we’re totally blowing it up and starting another rebuilding cycle, they’re probably worth more to us than they would be to another team.

What’s the organization saying about the path of Francisco Lindor and are fans hoping to see him rise quickly or to demonstrate he’s mastered each level before being bumped up?

They’re in no hurry. Asdrubal Cabrera is signed through 2014 so there’s no immediate need for a shortstop, and Lindor is only 18 years old. I’m not exactly sure how they’ll handle things as he rises through the minors—a lot can happen between Single-A and The Show, and that will probably become clearer in the next year or two. Most Tribe fans seem happy just salivating over his potential and aren’t too worried about rushing him through the system.

The Royals have been able to score some runs in their three series against Cleveland this year. Who do you want the staff to pitch around most?

Billy Butler. You guys have a lot of promising young bats, but none of them scare me like Butler. Any chance he can come down with a completely benign and painless injury that will keep him out of action until the end of the series?

On that note, who’s taking the mound this series, and what do you think they’ll do this time around?

First up is Derek Lowe (5.09 ERA, 4.69 SIERA), and I don’t think many Tribe fans are looking forward to that one. He doesn’t strike anyone out (seriously, he has a 3.1 K/9 rate) so he depends on inducing weak grounders with his sinker. It worked out great for the first month or so, but he’s been rocked to the tune of an 8.07 ERA in his last 11 starts (you read that right—this is a long slump). Much as I hate to say it, he hasn’t given us any reason to expect an improvement this time out.

Next is Zach McAllister (3.18 ERA, 3.62 SIERA), who (with apologies to Masterson) has been the Tribe’s best pitcher this year. After taking more of a pitch-to-contact approach in the minors he’s suddenly remembered how to strike batters out. He tends to be fairly homer prone (he gives up a lot of fly balls) and for what it’s worth he’s already allowed 10 unearned runs in 62.1 innings, but he’s the closest thing we have to a stopper right now. Pencil the Tribe in for a win when he pitches.

In the series finale you’ll draw Josh Tomlin (5.87 ERA, 4.59 SIERA). He’s what I like to call inherently inconsistent: he’s a soft-tossing pitch-to-contact hurler who gives up a ton of fly balls. Sometimes he makes it work, but since his success is based on so many things going right it’s very easy for his outings to end poorly. Get ready to swing because you’re not going to walk (he’s given up only one free pass in July), but the plus side for Kansas City is that you can swing for the fences. A bunch of good young hitters like the Royals will probably be able to tee off.

My responses to Lewie’s questions are posted at Wahoo’s On First.

There are thousands of different statistics in baseball. Some statistics get lots of press – home runs, strike outs, batting average, RBI’s, etc. Some statistics are fairly new and haven’t yet been completely absorbed by the collective consciousness of average baseball fans such as BABIP, FIP, WAR, etc. Other stats may be underrated but are critical to the success of any team. One of these underrated statistics is the defensive assist.

In every game, the first baseman will make several putouts. With the exception of the few times each game that the first baseman may catch a line drive, or beat the catcher back to the base on a grounder, most of these outs are preceded by another defensive player snagging the ball and throwing it to the first baseman. If it wasn’t for Alcides Escobar, aka #ShortStopJesus, and Mike Moustakas, aka #Moose throwing leather all over the left side of the infield, Eric Hosmer wouldn’t be credited with nearly as many putouts.

Jeff Francoeur puts fear into the hearts of opposing baserunners (Image: Peter G. Aiken-US PRESSWIRE)

For all their short comings, one thing the Royals have in good supply is strong defense. The left side of the field is covered by Gold Glover Alex Gordon, future Gold Glove shortstop Escobar, and the most improved third baseman in baseball, Moustakas. When Salvador Perez returns at catcher I believe he will significantly solidify our only current position of defensive weakness. Eric Hosmer plays strong defense, and Chris Getz, Jarrod Dyson / Lorenzo Cain can hold their own with the best of them. But there is one aspect of our defense that nearly outshines the others with consistently stunning and noteworthy performances – Jeff Francoeur and his lethal ability to gun down unsuspecting baserunners.

When I began writing this story, I started to research all the records for outfield assists so I could compare Francoeur to the great Carl Yastrzemski (he lead the league in outfield assists 7 times) and Roberto Clemente (led the league 5 times and many say he had the best arm ever), or talk about how some of the “so called” greatest players, such as Albert Belle and Barry Bonds were the easiest outfielders to run on, etc., etc. And then, I decided against it.

If given the choice, would you rather read about the history of the Grand Canyon, or would you prefer to stand on the edge, peering down into the magnificent canyon below while the sun set in the surrounding desert? Endure a tedious classical art lecture, or gaze opon the timeless face of the celebrated Mona Lisa? I decided not to engage in a boring discussion of defensive assists and simply pause for a few moments while we take in the majesty of the greatest outfield arm of our generation.

One of my all-time favorite baseball highlights is the video of Francoeur’s perfect, perfect, perfect throw to nail the Tiger’s Jhonny Peralta at third base on August 7 last year. Apparently, Peralta didn’t get the memo about Frenchy’s ability to throw runners out. I challenge you to find a more beautiful, almost breathtaking defensive play – Francoeur running toward the line to pick up the ball, whirling and launching a rocket to 3rd, capped by the ho-hum nonchalant tag made by Moustakas as if it happened every day. And check out the Tigers 3rd base coach’s reaction as he hangs his head during the slow motion replay, it’s classic. Click here to see perfection.

Then, fast forward to this season, May 1, 2012 and apparently Peralta was suffering a memory lapse evidenced by his ill-advised attempt to test Francoeur’s arm again. (Peralta would make a great subject for an SNL Weekend Update “Really?!?” skit.) Click here to see the result, as if you don’t already know. Don’t you just love watching Jhonny Peralta run the bases against the Royals? On the downside, this highlight would be a lot more enjoyable if the Royals weren’t losing 9-0 in the 4th inning.

Another of my all-time favorite defensive highlights is from September 7, 2011 when Michael Taylor of the Oakland A’s came to bat in only his 4th game and lined what appeared to be a sharp single into right field. Well, bad luck for Taylor, Jeff Francoeur was playing right field and as a baserunner you can never take anything for granted on a ball hit to Frenchy. Even more amazing to me is the fact that Hosmer went to first base to cover the throw from Francoeur. That is the definition of heads-up. Click here to see the embarrassing moment. Welcome to the big leagues rookie.

Last year, the ESPN blog ranked active outfielders’ throwing arms and came up with a virtual tie for the number one position between Francoeur and Shin-Soo Choo. In 2012, Choo has one assist, Francoeur has 5. End of discussion.

The difference between those who have the ability to throw out runners from the outfield and those who don’t is absolutely huge. In 2012, Francoeur is tied for the AL lead with 5 assists and only 16 other guys have two or more. Everyone else has one or none. Francoeur’s ability to throw out runners is similar to Willie Wilson’s ability to steal bases, or George Brett’s ability to hit for average, or Humberto Quintero’s ability to swing at the first pitch and tap a dribbler back to the pitcher – it’s far above the abilities of almost any other player in the league.

One thing worth mentioning in this story is that with all his talent, Jeff Francoeur didn’t lead the Royals in outfield assists last year. In 2011, that honor went to Alex Gordon. Remember this when you hear someone talking about an unfair arms race, they may be talking about the Royals rather than the Russians.

The Royals are having a rough time, and the Indians are a team that seemed to get it started, putting up 32 runs in the first three game series at Kauffman Stadium in 2012.

After dropping all ten games at home to start the year, the Royals hit the road and hope to turn it around. Their first stop is Cleveland, where they get a chance to exorcise the losing demons.

To get a feel for the series, Lewie Pollis, editor of FanSided’s Wahoo’s On First and I exchanged a few questions to get the other side of the story. My side of things is over on their site, so you can check it out and read my questions and Lewie’s responses:

Is there any fear as an Indians fan that you might catch the Royals when they’re “due” to break out?

In theory, yes. In practice, no. Before the season started we at Wahoo’s on First devoted one of our preseason “Weekly Wroundtables” to discussing which of our AL Central rivals we were most worried about for 2012 besides the Tigers; it was virtually unanimous for the Royals because of their upside. That said, I think most Indians fans very much look forward to watching the Tribe off against Kansas City when our teams meet.

The Royals have been awful with runners on during this stretch, but not at getting runners on. Who does Cleveland turn to in the middle innings to shut down a potential rally in this series?

That isn’t really clear. Aside from the Joe Smith-Vinnie Pestano-Chris Perez connection at the end of a close game we haven’t seen Manny Acta use his bullpen in an easily categorical way—a lot of that is due to starters not going as deep into games as they ideally should, as you saw when the Indians were in Kansas City.

You’d probably see Tony Sipp in the middle innings, maybe Rafael Perez if there’s a platoon advantage to be had or Dan Wheeler if the game is still young. But it depends on the situation and how much the bullpen has been drained by the end of the series.

Do you think there’s going to be more bean ball shenanigans with Sanchez on the mound again?

I don’t know man, that one’s on you guys. Sanchez broke Shin-Soo Choo‘s thumb last year, then he beans him again this year and doesn’t show a single ounce of remorse? Just think about that for a second. If you hit someone like that in real life and it was unintentional, wouldn’t you feel bad? Wouldn’t you apologize? I know that’s not general practice in baseball, but in the words of GOB Bluth: COME ON! I don’t know what Sanchez could possibly have against Choo, but it sure seems like he’s got something.

Royals fans were pretty happy booing Jack Hanahan and Shin-Soo Choo all weekend. Chris Perez incurred a fine for talking some trash. Is this a growing rivalry to you?

I don’t know that “rivalry” is the right word. The Indians perceived Sanchez’ beanball to be a deliberate attack on Choo—given his demeanor and their history, I don’t blame them—and responded as baseball players are wont to do. It’s never good to see bad blood between teams and if you forget the unwritten rules of baseball for a moment the more mature response would have been for the Tribe take the high road and let the lopsided score be their revenge. But Sanchez started this, and right or wrong it wasn’t surprising that Cleveland responded in kind.

The Royals managed to score some in the first series but just gave up too many. Who’s pitching for Cleveland and what adjustments will they look to make this time?

First up is Derek Lowe, meaning the Indians will live or die with his sinker. When it’s working for him, he’s golden. You’ll recall that he held the Royals to three runs in 6.2 innings two weeks ago. If it’s not, the Royals should be able to tee off. You should be able to tell pretty quickly what kind of night it is for him—his last time out he gave up a leadoff home run to Chone Figgins and things pretty much went downhill from there.

Ya’ll will draw Josh Tomlin in game two. The best thing about Tomlin is that he throws the ball over the plate. He led all of baseball in BB/9 last year and it’s been more than a year since the last time he walked more than one batter in a game. But the worst thing about Tomlin is also that he throws the ball over the plate. He’s a flyball pitcher whose fastball usually sits in the high 80′s, so when he makes his pitches a little too juicy bad things can happen.

Finally you’ll get Ubaldo Jimenez, and no one has any idea what to expect from him. His overall line so far (2-0, 4.00 ERA) looks good, but his peripherals have Tribe fans collectively tugging on their shirt collars and looking around nervously. It’s been only three start so far and he looked great in his season debut, but his game depends on the strikeout and he has only 11 punchouts through 18 innings so far. Even more alarming is that he’s also allowed 11 walks. He has the best stuff in the rotation, but he’s so erratic that you guys could have some fun with him.

Royals sweep THIS time, right, Lewie?

Absolutely! That’s a funny way to spell “Indians,” though.

At the start of the season they were just another team in the AL Central who was young and coming in with raised expectations. The Indians defeated the Royals 8-3 in the home opener dropping the team to 3-4.

But on Saturday night of the opening series, Jonathan Sanchez plunked Shin-Soo Choo sparking the first of two bench emptying moments. The second came in the bottom of the inning when Cleveland retaliated and Jeanmar Gomez hit Mike Moustakas. Jack Hanahan was ejected after getting into the middle of both incidents.

Three bench clearing incidents since last July, points that these teams aren't on the best of terms. Mandatory Credit: Peter G. Aiken-US PRESSWIRE

Choo and Sanchez have a history dating back to last year when the Giants and Indians played in interleague. Sanchez hit Choo resulting in him missing significant time, after getting plunked again it set him off and the benches cleared.

Last year the teams did get into a scuffle after Carlos Carrasco felt Melky Cabrera enjoyed his grand slam a little too much. When Billy Butler came up next Carrasco brushed him back which resulted in both benches clearing, so that’s three incidents since July of last season.

Kansas City wound up getting swept by Cleveland but the bad blood seems to be there as the crowds at the K booed Choo and Jack Hannahan the rest of the weekend. It’s hard to call something a rivalry when it’s as one-sided as the opening series. Missouri and Kansas fans can relate depending on the sport.

The Indians have had KC’s number the past couple years winning in various ways from blowouts to getting help from a flock of seagulls. Both teams have gone opposite directions since they last met in Kansas City.

Cleveland came in blew the doors off the Royals which our boys in blue have yet to recover from wrapping up a 0-10 homestand and losing 11-straight. To be a rivalry the results usually have to be somewhat even right? Tonight at Progressive Field the teams meet again and it’ll be interesting to see how Tribe fans treat KC. I don’t think they’ll boo like at the K. Cleveland has won 7-of-9 since the last time they saw the Royals and are a game out of first place.

Adding to the simmering rivalry, Chris Perez riled up players and fans by declaring it to be Tribe Time not Our Time during the opening series. Perez had previously gotten on my nerves being a Jose Valverde lite but he also seemed to rile up others with his tweet. His words earned him a fine from MLB even.

A change of scenery hopefully helps the Royals after such a rough homestand, but how about having the motivation that the Indians made them look awful and started this losing streak? When Kansas City lands they’ll check in with this losing streak but more importantly I hope they want payback for what Cleveland did to them on the scoreboard.

Both teams are young and on paper should be duking it out for years within the AL Central, but to be a rivalry KC has to win and what better time than tomorrow night.

It was well-deserved, too, as Billy hit .318/.388/.469 this season – definitely his best season yet – at the ripe young age of 24.* It wasn’t even particularly close, either, though David Dejesus might’ve made it competitive had he not injured his thumb. Mike just had a great rundown of Billy’s season, and you should check it out if you haven’t yet.

*He and guys like Madison Bumgarner make me feel like I’ve accomplished nothing in the same span of time as they have done so much.

Butler was definitely the best overall player the Royals could show this season (with nods to Soria and Dejesus as runners-up) and he seems to have locked down a position for years to come, barring a big trade. But, as is often said, being the best player on a team like the Royals doesn’t exactly bring a lot of necessary attention.

So, I started wondering. How does Billy’s year stack up against the best players on other clubs? The results might surprise you.
