In the latest episode of the Kansas City Baseball Vault, we tried to settle on the value of Jeremy Guthrie, the fate of Luke Hochevar and discussed why Wil Myers isn’t going to be called up this September.

That led to discussion about service time, the Rule 5 draft and Super Two status as well as what to look for this offseason as the Royals figure out their 40 man roster and who to offer arbitration. We also checked in on the playoff status of the Omaha Storm Chasers, Wilmington Blue Rocks and Burlington Royals.

You may have seen a man in the seats during the Royals series against the Orioles who came dressed in tights, a cape, no shirt and a Mexican luchador mask. This man, Neal Moorhouse, has been dubbed the LuchadOriole, and is one of a growing group of superfans.

This, of course, elated our own intrepid co-host, Troy “Royalman” Olsen and we invited Nea- I mean The LuchadOriole to talk to us on the show (via video Skype, no less). It was really quite something.

Troy and Chris also reviewed Dayton Moore’s recent trades and tried to grade his performance so far. They also talked about Jeremy Guthrie‘s solid performance lately, including his flirtation with a no-hitter on Sunday.

We also made the announcement that the podcast is making some changes – rather than being known as the Royalman Report, we’ll be adopting the name of the show we’d launched on ESPN 1510 AM, the Kansas City Baseball Vault. The same ideas, insight, occasional nonsense and guests that you’re accustomed to from the Royalman Report will be included the same as always. There’s just a different name, and more of a nod to the past at times. We’ll also be temporarily moving the timeslot to noon on Saturdays for the remainder of baseball season.

This Thursday, though, marks our final episode of the Kansas City Baseball Vault on ESPN 1510 AM – so it’ll live on in podcast form, rather than terrestrial radio. That final show will be at 6 p.m. CST on ESPN 1510 AM this Thursday.

Tonight we continue an exciting new venture for Kings of Kauffman and its podcast, the Royalman Report.

Jeff Logan of the Kansas City Baseball Historical Society joins forces with us to form the Kansas City Baseball Vault on Kansas City’s ESPN 1510 AM from 6-7 p.m. every Thursday night. Listeners can tune into traditional radio or streaming live on 1510.com.

Tonight’s first guest is “Diamond” Jim Gentile, a former All-Star and runner-up for Rookie of the Year in 1960 and an MVP candidate in the 1960s. He played in Kansas City with the Athletics in 1964 and 1965 after strong years with the Orioles.

We’ll also talk with Randy Herr, longtime Kansas City baseball fan and father of co-host Jeff Herr.

It all starts at 6 p.m. CST on ESPN 1510 AM in Kansas City or 1510.com if you’re out of the area.

The Royals just had a decent road trip but still came away with a loss on Sunday, so the Royalman Report tried to hearken back to better days, then tried to come up with how to bring those good days back.

We talked with our own Kevin Scobee of Kings of Kauffman about the Royals hints about converting some relievers into starters. The conversation led to talking about Luke Hochevar and what’s gone wrong, Kyle Zimmer and what’s going right and what attributes of some relievers work best if they were asked to become starters.

We also talked about Billy Butler‘s power surge in 2012 and marveled at his consistency even in the middle of a breakout. Then we set our sights on Steve Balboni‘s record – and wallowed in the fact that we’re still Royals fans, left behind while other small market teams challenge for playoff spots. Year Six…

We’ve talked a lot about what the Royals need to be doing this year, and or a while, they showed some signs of life after sitting Yuniesky Betancourt and Jeff Francoeur. We’ll talk about those changes and what they might signal the rest of the year and carrying over into next year.

Then we took a road trip to Kauffman Stadium to see this afternoon’s game – and on the way back, the Royals designated Betancourt for assignment and called up Tony Abreu.

We’ll start up early at 5:30 p.m. tonight, so be sure to check in with that in mind.

They say “never say it can’t get any worse”. We’ve already tried to get through the tough 12 game losing streak but a good stretch of play just got everyone’s hopes up. The Royals aren’t very good right now, and in this episode we tried to figure out why and what can be done.

With that in mind, we talked about pitching development (and you can see KoK Alumni Jeff Herr’s in depth article about it here), the next wave coming and what kind of things might go down as the trade deadline approaches.

(Also, technology was a bit down in the dumps too during recording, as we almost lost the first half of the show. We blame Frenchy.)

While Chris Kamler was hanging out in 100 degree heat watching little league and Jeff Herr was on assignment, Troy Olsen and Mike Engel had an afternoon discussion about the Royals weekend problems and their bipolar play lately.

They covered the Billy Butler all star announcement, guessed at his odds in the Home Run Derby and talked about other All Star selections.

The plight of Jonathan Sanchez came up as well, and they agreed that he’s been about as bad as possible since coming to the Royals.

Things wrapped up by talking about upcoming all star events and there’s an interview that Mike did with Craig Brown (@RoyalsAuthority) of Royals Review (formerly Royals Authority) to talk about the Royals blogosphere, Royals in contention and the fans’ reactions and the Baseball Prospectus event.

Jim Nash finished second in Rookie of the Year voting in 1966 for the Kansas City A’s with a 12-1 record and a 2.06 ERA. He was gracious enough to talk to us about his career and journey to the big leagues on the latest episode of the Vault.

Turns out, a chance discussion with manager Al Dark may have helped him get noticed during spring training and earned him a shot at the majors that year. He covers it in detail on the show.

We also talked to Aaron and Chance from Biking for Baseball – a group who travels by bike across the country and is visiting every big league stadium this season. Between games, they team up with Big Brothers Big Sisters to share baseball with children all over the country. They’re a fun group and doing good things.

After parting with our guests, we argued over Wil Myers, Jake Odorizzi, talked about All Star candidates and Royalman ranted about Jonathan Sanchez.

We were fortunate to talk with Royals catcher Brayan Pena on the Vault this week and he explained how he stays positive all the time, the dynamics of the clubhouse in Kansas City, the impending return of Salvador Perez and the understanding that he might be the odd man out. Brayan’s a fan favorite already, and it’s easy to see why.

Also on the show, we talked with Greg Pryor from the 1985 World Championship team and he discussed the feeling in the clubhouse during the series and the factors that drove them to victory. Pryor was in the lineup for two strange baseball games in his career and shared his recollection of Disco Demolition Night in 1979 and the Pine Tar Game of 1983.

The Royals had a great start to the homestand, taking 2 out or 3 from the Athletics and we were joined by KCTV 5′s Brad Fanning to break down the series. Brad also talked to us about his story on the Royals Baseball Academy that graduated players such as Frank White and Texas Manager Ron Washington to the big leagues. Then we were joined by Wilmington Blue Rocks starting pitcher Jason Adam who talked to us about needing run support and life on Twitter.

We got into a discussion about the Royals ability to develop prospects and their philosophies entering the draft tonight.

We finished the show with Royalman’s Rant and what may or may not be a picture of Fake Ned underneath a Kansas flag.

From the Kansas City Baseball Historical society and the minds behind The Royalman Report Podcast, we are excited to announce a new radio show on Kansas City’s ESPN 1510. The Kansas City Baseball Vault will combine the old and the new of Kansas City Baseball. The show will run Thursday evenings from 6pm to 7pm.

“Just about anything can come out of the vault,” says Jeff Logan, the president of the KC Baseball Historical Society.  The show is expected to feature alumnus of the Kansas City Monarchs, Athletics, T-Bones and Royals as well as updates on the current state of Kansas City Baseball.

The show will be hosted by Logan, Chris Kamler, Troy Olsen, Michael Engel and Jeff Herr of the popular Royalman Report Podcast.  The RMR has been going strong for over a year and features weekly updates on the Royals as well as interviews with bloggers, players and front office personnel.  Their podcast has been featured on Fox 4, Sports Radio 810 as well as 610 Sports.

“This is really a dream come true,” said Troy Olsen, one of the founders of the Royalman Report. “When the KCBHS approached us with this opportunity, we jumped at the chance.”  Troy is a Royals “superfan” and the creator of the Royalman Report Podcast.

Michael Engel, the Senior Editor of the Royals blog KingsOfKauffman.com, said “What a tremendous opportunity to bring the past and present of Kansas City Baseball to the sports fan.  There are so many exciting stories that will come out of the vault.”

In the summer of 2008, approximately 25 former players for the Kansas City Athletics attended a Kansas City A’s Reunion, hosted by the Kansas City T-Bones baseball club. The weekend event drew a large number of people who had fond memories of the A’s. Many longtime A’s fans began to discuss the possibility of a Kansas City baseball society to honor all of the rich history of baseball in Kansas City. From the Kansas City Cowboys in the 1880’s to the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues, the Major League Kansas City A’s and the current Kansas City Royals. Thus, in the fall of 2008, the Kansas City Baseball Historical Society (KCBHS) was formed, and registered as a not-for-profit organization in the State of Missouri.

The mission of the KCBHS is to promote the exchange of baseball history to all fans of Kansas City baseball. This includes memberships to the association and future meetings and events that will allow members to discuss and relate their experiences and memories, and also to hear from current and former players. The KCBHS website is being developed to allow the posting of stories, photographs and exchange of information among baseball fans.

The Royals have a number of pitching prospects, but how likely are they to pan out? Other teams, like the Rangers, Rays and Braves, see a surplus of major league ready arms, but the Royals are still waiting on the likes of Mike Montgomery, Chris Dwyer and Danny Duffy to sort it out.

Jeff Herr led a discussion with Alan Jaeger about the methods the Rangers have used and the programs available to developing pitchers. He covered a lot of the long toss philosophy and outlined its importance to a pitcher’s development. Overall it was very interesting. After talking with Alan, we discussed how the Royals fit into the equation.

Tonight, we’re going to catch up on some of the latest about the Royals and their merciful ending of The Streak. That’s a given.

The focus of tonight’s show, though, is on pitching, specifically on the Royals and their track record of developing pitching. Our guest for this discussion is Alan Jaeger, the founder of Jaeger Sports and whose program has benefited such pitchers as NL Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw and Diamondbacks prospect Trevor Bauer. Jaeger has worked with Mike Montgomery before, as well.

It should be an interesting discussion about pitching and training philosophies. We’re hoping to get an idea of where the Royals stand as far as their approach to taking prospects and turning them into the real deal at the big league level.

Spring training is in full swing and after talking with Joel Goldberg, Danny Duffy, Brooks Pounders and others about what’s going on, maybe it’s time we get someone who isn’t tied to the Royals to discuss our team.

Jason Parks from Baseball Prospectus and the Up and In Podcast (along with Kevin Goldstein) usually covers the Rangers. Conveniently enough, the Rangers and Royals share the complex in Surprise, Arizona. Parks can offer his opinion about how the Royals look, the expectations we should have, and how the farm system stands going into 2012.

On the day before the first Royals spring training game, we gathered on a Saturday night for an episode of the Royalman Report where we discussed the Royals camp news to that point, the addition of Bruce Chen (@ChenMusic) and Willie Aikens (@WAikens) to Twitter and some of the best tweets from Royals players this spring. We also talked at length about Salvador Perez, his extension, and his potential on the team now and going into the future.

We also got minor league pitcher Brooks Pounders on the line and asked him about his experience of being traded, the differences in approach between the Pirates and Royals, and his training with Alan Jaeger and long-toss regimen. Of course we had to talk about the relationships and friendships between players in camp and the enthusiasm that seems to be carrying from the big league team all the way to the lower levels of the minors. And the name – Fake Ned wouldn’t let him go without asking him about the name.

With Fox 4 taping us in studio, we celebrated the official start of Royals spring training with a Pitcher and Catchers edition of the Royalman Report. Joining us first was Jay Binkley of Three Guys in a Garage who discussed such matters as the Royals expectations and starting rotation, the Border War and going from a chilly garage to 810 in Kansas City.

We also talked with Jason Adam about what he’s working on in spring training and his goals for 2012. We also discussed his friendship with other Royals farmhands including Lane Adams, Matt Ridings and Bubba Starling. Jason’s a funny guy and we’re always glad to have him on when he has the chance.

We wrapped up by catching up on the latest news and looking at what lies ahead for the Royals.

We were excited about our guest lineup going into this Sunday’s podcast, and they did not disappoint.

The Royalman Report was glad to have Danny Duffy and Gar Ryness (The Batting Stance Guy) on the show in what turned out to be a guest-exclusive show.

We talked with Duffy about his goals for spring training, adjustments he had in mind, his idea of the team as a whole and their enthusiasm and what pushes him every day to improve. He also admitted that he thinks he’s not a bad dancer.

Gar Ryness took a quirky skill and turned it into fame. He talked with us about his love of baseball, the development of his multiple batting stance impersonations and why he thinks his “least marketable skill in America” strikes a chord with so many baseball players and fans.

This was a very fun show to record and we hope it’s even more fun to listen to. We couldn’t have asked for a better combination of guests.

There was no regular show in studio this week due to Christmas, but we have two never-before-released bonus interviews for you from the Royalman Report.

First, Chris Kamler talks with minor league signee Tommy Hottovy who signed with the Royals in November. He’s from Kansas City and made his major league debut last year with Boston.

Second, Troy Olsen got a couple of minutes with former World Series hero Joe Carter. The interview is from the Buck O’Neil birthday celebration last month.

We finish up with a collection of segments from Joel Goldberg, Sam Mellinger and Rustin Dodd discussing Frank White’s dismissal from the Royals.

It’s been a great first year for the show and we greatly appreciate everything we’ve gotten from our loyal listeners. Included are holiday wishes from many listeners.

The Royalman Report, LIVE Sundays at 7 pm CST

We had arranged an interview for Sunday’s Royalman Report with Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus.

There were some complications. Jason is currently in Mexico on assignment, and due to that, the various attempts and maneuvers to patch him into the studio were in vain. We apologize that he wasn’t able to be a part of the show last night.

However.

We do have him set to talk with us on October 23, by which time we’ll have the gremlins worked out.

The show must go on, as they say, and we still talked about the importance of the instructional league, the relevance of offseason statistics, Bubba Starling, Wil Myers, Jason Adam and more. We even snuck in some Chiefs discussion (if you’re into that sort of thing.)

The Royalman Report, LIVE Sundays at 7 pm CST

Between Jeff Francoeur‘s contract extension and the chaos of the draft pick signing deadline, there was plenty to discuss in this week’s Royalman Report (brought to you by Kelly’s Westport Inn).

Troy was out of the studio so I took the reins and was joined by Chris Kamler – @fakenedyost to the Twitter-inclined.

We talked about the signing deadline and the makeup of the Royals minor leagues with Clint Scoles of Pine Tar Press focusing on the lower levels and international signings.

For previous listeners, you’ll notice a slight change in format, as we’ve scrapped music during the breaks in order to revisit past interviews with personalities from the Royals organization and other baseball folks.  This week, Troy’s interview with Billy Butler at the HyVee signing last week is included as well as a segment of his interview with Omaha’s announcer Mark Nasser.

It’s always great to get insight from baseball players, and talking with Jason Adam on the Royalman Report last night is no exception.  He discussed his preparation, his path to the big leagues and offered his personal views on the signing period after being drafted in the fifth round in 2008.

We were also joined by Jed Marshall of 810 Sports “Three Guys in a Garage” for a segment talking about the big league begginings of Johnny Giavotella and Mike Moustakas.

We were also joined by Eric Edelstein, the General Manager of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.  I want to thank Eric again for being gracious enough to join us during his busy schedule (Jake Odorizzi was making his first home start while we were talking with him).  He discussed many interesting things including the crop of prospects in Double A right now, last year’s championship run, and an interesting story about the construction of Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, Arkansas.
