Nate Adcock started for the Storm Chasers and left in the 8th inning with a runner on second base and one out. Vin Mazzaro entered and allowed the runner to score (and took the loss).

On offense, the Storm Chasers only had five hits, with Max Ramirez picking up two hits. He also drove in both runs.

Christian Colon was placed on the DL due to an eye injury. He spent a good chunk of his season in Double-A on the DL already. You can find out more HERE (the bottom of the article).

Clinging to a 4-2 lead, Midland scored five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to defeat NW Arkansas, 7-5. The Naturals made it interesting in the top of the 9th inning, by scoring a run and putting runners on first and second base with just one out. However Whit Merrifield and Brian Fletcher struck out to end the game.

Yem Prades went 3-for-5 in the leadoff spot and Paulo Orlando went 2-for-4 in the loss.

Jason Adam

It was the Adam & Adams show for Wilmington on Wednesday night, as they beat Potomac, 9-1. Lets start with outfielder Lane Adams. He drove in the Blue Rocks’ first run in the top of the first inning and came around to score another in that seven-run inning. In the end, he went 3-for-5.

Jason Adam made another dominant start for the Blue Rocks, as he pitched six shutout innings. He allowed four hits and struck out five. He didn’t allow a hit until the 3rd inning and only had multiple base runners in one inning (the fourth, but with two outs).

Clinton scored all ten of their runs from the fourth to the sixth innings to beat Kane County, 10-4. This was after the Cougars had a 3-0 lead.

Every starter for the Cougars, except Justin Trapp had at least one hit. Alex Llanos went 2-for-4. Chris Elder, who has been on the move all season, went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Bubba Watch: Bubba Starling went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored in Burlington’s 2-0 win over Princeton. Each team collected just three hits.

Omaha mounted a two-run comeback in the bottom of the 9th inning to tie the game and Max Ramirez hit a three-run walk-off in the 12th inning to beat Albuquerque, 5-2. David Lough drove in the two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning on a two out, two-run single.

In the top of the 10th inning, Omaha reliever Blaine Hardy escaped a bases loaded, one out jam by getting a double play ball.

Lorenzo Cain and Chris Getz continued their rehab with the Storm Chasers. Cain was the DH and went 1-for-5. Getz played second base for nine innings and went 0-for-4.

Jake Odorizzi got the start for Omaha, but lasted just five innings despite only allowing two runs on five hits (he threw 92 pitches).

NW Arkansas lost to San Antonio, 3-2 in 11 innings. The newest Natural Nick Rogers struggled to throw strikes in the 11th inning (his first appearance in Double-A), as he walked in the winning run (he walked three and allowed a single in the inning). He did not record an out (command was something he struggled with in Wilmington over the last few weeks).

The Naturals had just two hits in the loss and scored both of their runs on sac flies.

Michael Mariot allowed two runs on four hits over the first seven innings. Jon Keck followed with three hitless innings of relief.

Wilmington scored six runs in the top of the 13th inning to win at Frederick, 12-6. Keys reliever Brandon Erbe took the loss, as he threw just three strikes (out of 22 pitches) while walking five. That forced Frederick to use a position player to finish the inning.

Blue Rocks reliever Sam Runion picked up the win, despite blowing the save in the 9th inning (he allowed a solo homerun to Aaron Baker). Runion allowed three hits over four innings. Infielder Luis Piterson was forced to pitch in the bottom of the 13th inning after reliever Cole White put two men on base (Gameday said there was an injury delay for both Erbe and White). Piterson struck out Frederick’s position player pitcher Jeremy Nowak to end the game. Antonio Cruz, who replaced Rogers on the Blue Rocks roster, pitched two scoreless innings of relief earlier in the game.

The top five in the Blue Rocks order collected 13 of the team’s 17 hits. Matt Fields went 4-for-7 with two homeruns and two doubles. Whit Merrifield and Cheslor Cuthbert each had three hits in the win.

Kane County defeated Peoria, 6-0 with a solid pitching effort by three pitchers. Angel Baez started and allowed just two hits over six innings. He struck out eight. Cody Fassold followed with two scoreless innings while striking out four. Robinson Yambati finished the game with a perfect inning.

The 4-5 hitters for the Cougars (Jorge Bonifacio and Murray Watts) went a combined 4-for-8 with two runs scored.

Bubba Watch: Bubba Starling hit his first two homeruns of his professional career, as he went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and six RBIs.

Yesterday, Salvador Perez felt a tweak in his knee while warming up Jonathan Sanchez in the bullpen before the Royals spring matchup against the Reds. After catching one inning, Perez left the game in visible pain and limping.

The Royals sent him in for an MRI and then back to Kansas City for further testing to determine the extent of any damage and the news is not good. Perez has a tear in his left meniscus and surgery to repair it will have him out for a while. This follows news from nearly three weeks ago when Manuel Pina underwent surgery to repair a similar tear. Pina was expected to be out 6-8 weeks, but after missing all of spring training, he won’t likely start his season in the big leagues.

That leaves Brayan Pena as the only healthy catcher on the Royals 40 man roster, though Max Ramirez has been hitting the ball hard in every game he’s been in and could back up. Cody Clark has seen a lot of time as well in spring action. Ivan Rodriguez is still available and has been reported to want playing time, though, as long as there aren’t complications or further damage to Perez or Pina, he won’t get it for long. He’s well past his prime and had only a .604 OPS for Washington last year in 44 games, but he still threw out 13 of 25 would-be basestealers. Other options could become available once teams start placing players on waivers at the end of camp. Ramon Castro is another option available on the market.

Perez is weeks removed from signing a new contract that, after team options, would have him in Kansas City through 2019.

His missing time is a blow to an organization trying to establish its core of young players this year with an eye towards an extended period of contention. Perez is a big part of that core with defensive skills and a great arm that make him a force behind the plate and strength and bat control that could make him a solid contributor with the bat (especially for a catcher). He’s also a leader and has been noted as a favorite target of many pitchers in the Royals system since coming up through the system. Provided that there are no other issues when surgery is performed, a reasonable expectation for his return is 6-8 weeks, according to Will Carroll.

If anything, there were some rumors that Perez may have torn an ACL, but those turned out to be nothing. A ligament tear would have been a far more devastating injury. In other sports, players have come back within just a couple of weeks from meniscus injuries.

He’ll lose out on time building more rapport with the Royals pitching staff. Once recovered, he should be fine, but he’ll always have the specter of other complications or injuries to the knee lurking. He’s not a small player by any means and spending most of his days crouching won’t help a once-repaired knee. He’ll have to work hard to maintain his conditioning and strengthen the joint to get back to speed.

The highest ranked catching prospect in the Royals system is Cameron Gallagher, a 2011 second round pick out of high school. He’s still far away from the big leagues, so the Royals are limited in high-ceiling options behind Perez.

Felipe Paulino started the game, his first appearance of the spring, and worked two good innings as he works to remain in the starting rotation. He reaped the benefits of inducing double plays in both innings and also coaxed another ground out while striking out one. Paulino should be safe when it comes down to deciding the rotation (barring injury), but having him put up a couple of good innings is good for his cause and, of course, good for the Royals.

Aaron Crow also saw his first action and was even better, striking out two and giving up just one walk in his two innings. He’s more of a longshot to crack the starting five and may just be better in the bullpen anyway, but the Royals are looking at him in case they’re pressed to use him in a larger role.

Jose Mijares, Tommy Hottovy, Louis Coleman, Brandon Sisk and Jeremy Jeffress each worked an inning and all but Hottovy recorded a strikeout. Altogether, the Royals pitchers handled the Rockies.

A few players continued hot streaks in early spring action. Lorenzo Cain had two hits and seems to be putting the ball in play every time up. That bodes well for him, as many have been concerned about his offensive ability as he tries to replace – somehow – a 200 hit season from Melky Cabrera. It’s still early and he could always slump the last three weeks of spring, but he’s been one of the more impressive players in the young Cactus League season.

Max Ramirez continued to rake, hitting his third spring homer and getting his seventh RBI. It’s still not likely that he’ll really push Brayan Pena for the backup job, but if he keeps hitting, the Royals won’t have a choice. Pena is out of options though so he’s got nowhere to go, and should be a decent enough backup for Salvador Perez.

As much as it pains me to say it, Yuniesky Betancourt homered and made some plays at second base. It seems my pleas for Irving Falu to be the utility player will go unanswered.

Alex Gordon also ripped a double to open the game.

The Royals made a number of outs on the basepaths, and have been getting thrown out in other games as well. Ned Yost made a point to be aggressive on the basepaths last year so that’s probably the plan this year too. My hunch is that the Royals are seeing what they can and can’t get away with now so it gives them an idea of what they should be aware of once the season starts. Last year’s team made a lot of things happen by being aggressive but they also ran themselves out of innings. That’s a tough balance to hit, but that’s also what spring training is for – to find it out.

The Royals will play the Reds tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. CST. Danny Duffy will make his first spring appearance.

Good news: The Royals beat the Padres in Surprise 7-4 behind a power display by Max Ramirez in the DH slot.

Bad news: Short of an Irving Falu homer, they only scored twice in a loss to the Indians.

One of the great things about spring training is getting younger players a chance to get into a game. With two split squad games on Tuesday, the Royals managed to insert a number of non-roster invitees into the lineup to get a look at them on the big fields.

Ramirez, who’ll likely start as the primary catcher in Omaha with Manuel Pina recovering from knee surgery, drove in four with two opposite field homers and Derrick Robinson and Jarrod Dyson used bunts and speed to create three runs. Johnny Giavotella added two hits to bring his spring average up to .500.

Luke Hochevar struck out one, walked one and gave up a hit in his two innings of work. He was followed by Jake Odorizzi for two innings. Odorizzi had a strong first inning of work but gave up four hits in his second inning of work, resulting in two runs. His secondary stuff may not have been sharp (going off of MLB.com’s Gamecast), as he threw 35 fastballs in 45 pitches, but only threw a strike once in his other ten pitches (comprised of curveballs, changeups and a slider). Joakim Soria worked one inning, giving up a double to James Darnell, who scored on an Everth Cabrera single. Soria got Yonder Alonso to ground into a double play to end the inning. Greg Holland worked the ninth, striking out Blake Tekotte to end the game after two groundouts and a double.

3/6/12 Padres vs. Royals scorecard:

In Goodyear, Arizona, the Royals sent Will Smith against the Indians and he had relatively little trouble against a lineup of Cleveland reserves. Jose Lopez and Shelley Duncan both had singles after two outs in the first, but Smith escaped, then induced three groundouts in his second inning of work.

The Indians offense boiled down to one swing by Duncan, who homered with two outs off of Zach Miner in the third inning.

The Royals made up two runs in the fourth inning on a homer by Irving Falu, but the Royals would only get a runner in scoring position one more time the rest of the game, when Kevin Kouzmanoff doubled, sending Clint Robinson to third with two outs in the seventh inning. Both were stranded after Sharlon Schoop (who pinch-hit for Brett Eibner after Eibner was shaken up on a diving catch) grounded out to short.

Billy Butler reached base three times with two singles and a walk and Mike Moustakas walked and singled in the game.

Cuban lefty Noel Arguelles worked two innings, allowing just a single and reportedly looked sharp. Jeremy Jeffress worked a perfect inning as well.

The Royals take on the Cubs tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. CST. Jonathan Sanchez and Everett Teaford are scheduled to pitch as well as Kelvin Herrera, Nate Adcock, Blake Wood and Tim Collins (who have already gotten their first game action out of the way).

*The Indians complex apparently doesn’t have pitch f/x set up, so the Gamecast was not charting every pitch. Instead, it counted only pitches tied to a result.

The Royals released their list of spring training non-roster invitees last week, and as usual the list is filled equally with promising young prospects and replacement level bargains. Many won’t make an impact on the 2012 Royals, but nonetheless it is an opportunity to impress the front office brass. A strong showing as a non-roster invitee can put a top prospect on the fast track.

Non-roster invitees are intriguing because they are all upside. Even established major leaguers who find themselves signed as non-roster invitees are promised nothing but an opportunity. There is nothing to lose, but everything to gain.

For instance, the Royals brought in 23 non-roster invitees in 2011, and only Tim Collins and Louis Coleman made the opening day roster. But they weren’t the only players who made an impression.

Fellow non-roster invitees Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Danny Duffy, Salvador Perez, Johnny Giavotella, and Luis Mendoza eventually played games for the Royals last year. Several other prospects, including Mike Montgomery, impressed as well.

So, you must be thinking, which non-roster invitees have the best chance to make an impact in 2012? How thoughtful of you to ask. I’ve put together my list, ranking each invitee from most to least likely to have an MLB impact this year. I’ll also give percentage odds for each player, in order to show which guys have earned the greatest share of my confidence in their ability to help this year’s Kansas City Royals.

What could be more scintillating than that?

Mike Montgomery – 85%

I’ve already given my thoughts on Montgomery here, so I’ll try to keep this short and sweet. Not only do I think the Royals need Montgomery to produce for the big league club this year, but I also think he almost surely will impress. I expect Montgomery to follow Danny Duffy’s 2011 trajectory and earn a major-league call-up sometime in May. Montgomery simply doesn’t need another full season in Omaha, and he possesses superior raw stuff to Duffy. It’s also important to remember that Duffy’s leapfrog of Montgomery last season was a notable shock. Montgomery remains the better prospect with the better stuff, and I think he’ll have a campaign that’s slightly better than Duffy’s 2011. And this is coming from a guy who thought Duffy positively impressed last season. Montgomery is all set to be a gem.

Kevin Kouzmanoff – 60%

This is where the meaning of the word ‘impact’ becomes skewed a bit. I have no delusions of grandeur regarding Kouzmanoff. Although once a promising prospect, Kouz is essentially a replacement level player at this point (career .300 OBP). At the same time I think he has a fighter’s chance to make the 25 man roster (as a backup to Mike Moustakas at third base), and he very well may be the only person on this list who is able to make that claim.

In order to have an impact, a player actually has to suit up for the team. Whether through an inspired spring performance, injury, or inconsistency, I’m 60% confident that Kouzmanoff will play in 40 or more games for the Royals this season. If that becomes the case, then I am 95% confident that I will inevitably unleash a drunken, expletive-laden tirade against Kouzmanoff this summer when he is mired in a 0-21 spell and sporting a .285 OBP.

Wil Myers – 39%

Ok, hear me out here. Alex Gordon, Jeff Francouer, and Lorenzo Cain will be the starting outfield for the opening day Royals, barring injury. The next best available options appear to be Mitch Maier, Jarrod Dyson, and David Lough.  Each of those guys has their merits, but none of them are Wil Myers.

Here’s a question for you: why can’t Myers be this year’s version of Eric Hosmer? Myers is 21 years old, or to put it a different way, the same age Hosmer was at the beginning of last season. Myers also played last season at Northwest Arkansas, the same level Hosmer reached in 2010 before being placed on the fast track.

Like Hosmer in 2010, Myers dominated in the subsequent Arizona Fall League. Sure, his numbers don’t stack up with Hosmer’s Double-A figures. But Myers had some extenuating circumstances. He suffered a nasty knee injury after a fluky spill at the beginning of the season, and struggled to regain his form afterwards. But like Hosmer, the physical tools are still there: the quick bat, the plate discipline, and the rocket arm have not gone anywhere. Plus, Myers has already played twice as many games at Double-A as Hosmer did. The Royals moved Myers from catcher so that he could progress quickly through the system, and with a strong spring, I think they’ll give him the same chance Hosmer did to shoot through the system like a meteor. Furthermore, after last season, Myers has something to prove. I expect to see him with the Royals by the end of the season, even if it’s just for a cup of coffee.

Max Ramirez – 29%

Here’s a guy who I have had trouble deciding on. He should probably be placed further down this list, since he is ostensibly behind Salvador Perez, Brayan Pena, and Manny Pina on the depth chart. But he is a career .867 OPS hitter in the minor leagues. And since he’s played 646 games in the minors over eight seasons, I’d venture to say that his offensive numbers aren’t a mirage built on small sample size. That .867 OPS is 100 points better than Pena’s minor league total, and 200 points over what Pina has produced thus far.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I would not be overly shocked if the Royals cut bait with Pena and Ramirez emerges as Perez’ backup this season. Keep in mind that Perez is young and fresh, and may not need more than 30 games off behind the dish this season. Wouldn’t it be nice to finally have some pop and patience at the catcher position? Even if Ramirez is utilized primarily as a pinch hitter, I see some value there. Oh, and while writing this piece, I learned that Ramirez’ given first name is Maximiliano. So there’s also that to inspire confidence.

Irving Falu – 26%

I know what the most cynical and sarcastic of fans will say here: “whenever you can get a 28 year old career minor leaguer with a .696 career OPS into the lineup you’ve got to seize the opportunity.” I know that’s what you’re thinking because it was exactly what I first thought upon seeing Falu’s name among the non-roster invitees. But then I realized that the primary backup infielders will probably be some combination of Kouzmanoff, Yuniesky Betancourt, and Chris Getz, and I suddenly began reconsidering Falu’s candidacy in earnest. And there are some things to like about Falu.

For instance, did you know that he’s recorded more walks than strikeouts during his minor league career? Or that he has logged games at all three outfield spots, second base, shortstop, and third base? Or that 2011 was his best statistical season? I’m not saying he’s a lock to contribute or anything, but I think assuming he’s still with the organization, that he’ll be the first middle infielder recalled if there is an injury. If that’s not a ringing endorsement then I don’t know what is.

Chris Dwyer – 25%

Hey, I’m not saying I’m banking on it, but I would not be shocked to see Dwyer make a couple of starts for the Royals in 2012. After pitching four games for Northwest Arkansas in 2010, Dwyer remained in Double-A for the entirety of 2011. Although he struggled during the first half, Dwyer turned it on in the second half and actually out-produced highly touted prospect Jake Odorizzi while both were toiling for Northwest Arkansas. Dwyer also has more strikeouts than walks in his career, so the stuff is there. If the front office believes that the second half Dwyer is the real version, then he could be a fast riser this season.

Zach Miner – 20%

Sure he doesn’t strike out anybody, and he is still working his way back from a major injury in 2010. I get that. But looking at Miner with squinted eyes, I also see that Miner has a 25-20 career record in the major leagues to accompany his 4.24 cumulative ERA. Once you see the other pitchers on this list, and their career major league experience, you’ll see why Miner is so high up this list.

Will Smith – 16%

Smith would probably be above Dwyer on this list if my intuition hadn’t led me to believe Dwyer will have a breakout season. Smith, though, did plenty well for himself at Northwest Arkansas in 2011. Smith put up a 13-9 record and a 3.85 ERA in a full season of Double-A, and was probably the best pitcher on NWA’s staff. Also going for Smith is the fact that he’s already pitched (albeit poorly) in Triple-A while in the Angels system. There’s no reason that Smith should go back to Northwest Arkansas next year, which means that he will be among the pitchers in Omaha with the best chance to get a late season or injury-induced call-up. I’d say that’s makes him about a 16% chance to make an impact on the big league club.

Jake Odorizzi – 7%

Odorizzi is clearly a year away, and that is not a bad thing. He got roughed up a little bit in his introduction to Double-A last year after torching High-A Wilmington. Odorizzi won’t turn 22 until March, so another season spent between Northwest Arkansas and Omaha could still be constructive for one of the organization’s top young prospects. There is still an outside chance that

Tony Abreu – 6%

I’m just not seeing it with Abreu. Give me Falu every day of the week. Abreu can’t hit and doesn’t walk. He owns a career .279 OBP. He should be purely minor league filler. Major league service time alone places him above the other names on this list.

Greg Golson – 5%

The best thing Golson has going for him is his versatility. He’s played all three outfield positions in the minors and possesses a enough speed to make him dangerous on the base paths. Unfortunately, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Golson has been struck out a whopping 941 times in his minor league career, against just 207 walks. Myers, Jarrod Dyson, and David Lough are simply better players than Golson and will get any call-up before him.

Cody Clark, Paulo Orlando, Tommy Hottovy, Francisley Bueno Julio Rodriguez – 0.00%

None of these guys has a chance to crack the big league roster in 2012. Frankly, their inclusion among the non-roster invitees seems a bit dubious. I’m not even going to sugarcoat it: when I saw Francisley Bueno’s name mentioned among the camp invites, I had no idea who he was. None at all. What is he doing at major league camp?

But I guess that’s the nature of non-roster invitees. There are no expectations. If Dayton Moore wants to bring in a guy whose name translates to “good”, then by all means he should be empowered to do so. And if Bueno somehow turns into Ricky Vaughn, then I will happily eat crow.

I don’t think I’m alone in saying I want to see what Montgomery and Myers can do in MLB camp but realistically both in my opinion won’t be in Kansas City until after the all-star break. From a practical standpoint I think the team needs the versatile Falu to have a good camp to help the bench. Lastly let’s be realistic, Kouzmanoff was signed to be in KC so this is his tryout to be the team’s backup to Moose at third.

After some time without much news, the Royals announced that they’ve signed four players to minor league deals: catcher Max Ramirez, RHP Juan Gutierrez, LHP Francisley Bueno, and outfielder Greg Golson.

Ramirez, 27, has played in 45 games for the Texas Rangers, batting .217/.343/.357 in 140 plate appearances. He arrived to Texas in a time when Taylor Teagarden and Jarrod Saltalamacchia were part of what was supposed to be the future of Ranger backstops, which never occurred. Ramirez has spent most of his time at AAA, where he’s hit .262/.338/.405 for his career. He should give the Royals minor league teams depth behind the plate. His full first name is Maximiliano, so that’s fun.

Gutierrez, 28, has been a reliever in the majors with the Houston Astros and Arizona Diamondbacks, compiling a 4.79 ERA over 167.1 innings since 2007. He can strike out big numbers, but also gives up a considerable number of hits. He was released by the Diamondbacks back in mid-October. Gutierrez figures to be insurance should the Royals have injuries or poor performances in their bullpen.

Bueno, 30, pitched 2.1 innings for the Atlanta Braves back in 2008, giving up two runs on five hits. Otherwise, he’s mostly pitched at AAA outside of a nine-game stint with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korean Baseball League in 2010. Bueno has been used both as a starter and a reliever and has a 4.21 ERA in 286.1 innings at AAA. He should be a starter and spot-reliever for Omaha and used as a reliever or spot-starter for the Royals if absolutely necessary.

Golson, 26, is probably the most interesting of the group. He’s spent time in the majors with the Phillies, Rangers, and Yankees over the past four seasons, though it’s mostly been for defensive replacements. He has a line of .195/.214/.244 in 42 plate appearances over 40 games and is described as a “toolsy” guy that’s never quite gotten it all together. Golson’s hit .261/.313/.380 in AAA for his career and would make a mean outfield defense with Jarrod Dyson in Omaha. It’s a good flyer to take on a guy that’s still before his peak.
