Wil Myers, Lorenzo Cain Heat Up Winter Leagues

After a disappointing year in Double A where he missed time due to injuries, Wil Myers is making up for lost time in the Arizona Fall League.

Myers leads all Royals hitters taking place in offseason leagues with a 1.214 OPS. He also leads all hitters in base hits, walks, runs scored, RBI and extra base hits. He’s taking advantage of the opportunity to get in more time in the outfield as well, logging an outfield assist at the plate. It’s an encouraging sign after he hit .254/.351/.393 in Northwest Arkansas as a 20-year-old.

Outfielder Lorenzo Cain has also put up good numbers, with seven hits in his first 19 at bats in the Venezuelan League.

Trading Places: Sal Perez, Kelvin Herrera Promoted to Omaha

Little by little, the Royals are working their best young minor leaguers closer to the majors. Today, two potential impact players were promoted to Omaha.

Salvador Perez, the prospective catcher of the future, has made it to Triple A at the ripe age of 21 years old. Perez, considered an elite defensive talent, threw out 43 of 90 potential base stealers in Northwest Arkansas in 2011. He has a career 43% success rate in the minors in limited would-be thieves.

Kelvin Herrera, who was in the All-Star Futures game at the All-Star Break, has a 52/8 K/BB ratio in 50.2 innings pitched out of the bullpen.

Here it is, your weekly update on how the Royals minor league affiliates are doing. It was a decent week for the affiliates as Burlington and Northwest Arkansas continue to be top teams in their leagues and Kane County and Omaha have been righting the ship, Omaha especially as their bats are starting to wake up and they are now 8-7. They have lost a couple of key relievers this week with the promotions of Blake Wood and Louis Coleman but make no mistake, this team still has a lot of pitching talent and will be fine. Here is where the affiliates stand as of today:

Kane County Cougars – 6-9 (7th place)

Wilmington Blue Rocks – 9-4 (1st place)

Northwest Arkansas Naturals – 7-5 (1st place)

Omaha Storm Chasers – 8-7 (2nd place)

Kings of Kauffman Prospect Rankings: Honorable Mention

Let’s face it, the Royals are loaded with prospects. For the purpose of actual rankings, I’ve gotten input from the other contributors here on Kings of Kauffman and finalized the countdown. (You can look at last year’s rankings here.)

And just like building a piece of furniture out of the box from Walmart, there are a lot of other pieces laying about, and I have a feeling they’re important.

These are a handful of prospects who I think warrant mentioning, but fall just short of getting a full profile:

Royals Select Nathan Adcock in Rule 5 Draft

In this morning’s Rule 5 Draft, the Royals selected right-handed pitcher Nathan Adcock out of the Pirates organization with the fifth overall pick. Adcock was part of the Jack Wilson/Ian Snell trade between the Pirates and Mariners in 2009.

Moose, Hosmer Among MiLB All-Stars

Three levels of Minor League Baseball have started announcing their All-Star teams and the Royals system is well represented, especially by the most important prospects in the system. Triple A voting doesn’t end until June 25th, but so far, the Royals have 14 minor league all-stars in their midst.

Mike Moustakas and Eric Hosmer‘s fine seasons have earned them All-Star honors, but what other prospects will represent the Royals? Read on.

There is a solid 2-inch layer of ice and snowpack on the lower third of my driveway, after shoveling, and we have more snow on the way later this week.
