Tomorrow night, the MLB Amateur Draft will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern time with the first round. The Royals have the fifth overall pick and there are many options in this year’s draft – it’s been billed as one of the deeper talent pools in recent memory.

The Royals are virtually certain not to mess up their first pick with many strong picks available to them at their turn.

Jeff Herr and Ryan Wood have profiled the potential selections when it gets to the Royals. If you’ve missed them, you can catch up from the list below: (more…)

It’s Mizzou Day at the K today, so maybe some Tigers out there will be at the game and won’t abandon Kings of Kauffman when I say that I’m an alumnus of the University of Kansas and have been a of the basketball team since about 1990.

That means I saw a lot of Roy Williams. He seemed to have a pattern of pulling in one big recruiting class then taking the next season off, getting roleplayers into the program instead. Then he’d be right back to getting stars. Bill Self took over in 2003 and since has brought in strong classes every year. Maybe the results aren’t there every season, but Self has lost players to the NBA and kept a strong team year after year. Roy had a few down seasons after strong classes would graduate.

Turning to the Royals, if you’ve followed the franchise for any length of time – and I’ve been a fan since kindergarten – you know that the Royals have been in a rebuilding mode since about 1995. Blame what you want: bad draft strategy, penny-pinching, plain old bad luck. The Royals have been bad and for a very long time.

Fellow writer Ryan Wood and myself are gonna bring something to Kings of Kauffman that you all will hopefully find interesting. As the Major League Baseball Amatuer Draft is coming up on June 6th we thought it would be both fun and entertaining to outline draft prospects the Royals could select at #5 (which is a good spot because there is a lot of talent in this years draft) and compare them to a current prospect or rookie that is currently in the Royals system. The idea is to profile where they fit in the organization and how they will most likely be handled moving forward. The Royals have a couple waves of talent coming but there is a slight hole after that.
