How crowded can the outfield get?

We thought we knew all the players in the Royals 2010 outfield mix. David DeJesus, Rick Ankiel, and Scott Podsednik figure to be the every day starters. Then there is the “part-time” group that is fronted by Brian N. Anderson and Mitch Maier. This group also theoretically includes the following: Jose Guillen, Josh Fields, Willie Bloomquist, and Alberto Callaspo. Add to that the two other outfielders on the 40-man roster, Jordan Parraz and Jarrod Dyson, and it seems like the Royals have a lot of “parts” to work with. (more…)

Rick Ankiel signs with the Royals

Last night I shut my trusty laptop down at about 11:00 pm. I proceeded to watch a little TV and was in bed shortly after midnight. When I woke up and checked my email on my Blackberry, I saw that one of my friends had sent me an email titled simply ANKIEL. My heart sank as I knew just from that one-word subject that the Royals just signed 30-year old OF-Rick Ankiel. Our initial reactions are often wrong, and this case was no different. (more…)

Scott Podsednik Adds to the Mystery

Where are Scooby, Shaggy, and the rest of the Mystery Inc. gang when you need them? Seriously, what the hell is Dayton Moore doing? I’m not a major league GM, though I’m taking calls if any team is crazy enough to hire me, and by crazy I mean crazy like a fox. Coming off a 65-97 record and with no hope of contention in 2010, the logical course of action seemed pretty simple. Dayton and I clearly have differing views on the concept of logical and simple. Non-Tendered Class of 2009 (Position Players)

As dawn broke Saturday morning, almost 40 players found themselves non-tendered and freshly dunked into the free agent waters. Some of the names were surprising (Matt Capps) and some were completely expected (John Buck).
