It could have been better. But it could have been worse.

The KC Royals came into Sunday needing a victory to secure a series split with Minnesota in hopes of making sure the Twins didn’t gain any ground on them in the Central.

Minnesota scored first when Trevor Plouffe and Miguel Sano hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the second inning to make the score 1-0. They scored again in the third when Aaron Hicks led off with a home run to make the score 2-0.

The Royals answered back in the bottom of the third when Omar Infante led off with a walk and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jarrod Dyson. Drew Butera followed up with a single to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Twins. The Royals were then able to tie things up in the fifth inning when Alex Gordon hit a one-out solo home run.

The score stayed tied all the way up to the bottom of the ninth. Lorenzo Cain led off the inning with a walk and Eric Hosmer then doubled to right and Cain was able to score as the Royals walked off for the second time in the series with a 3-2 win.

That double was enough to make a winner of Greg Holland, who allowed one hit in his inning of work. Danny Duffy had a solid start as he continues to look closer to the pitcher from 2014, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks in 6.1 innings of work.

The KC Royals are 46-33 and are now 4.5 games up on the second place Twins. They begin a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays tomorrow as they head into the final week before the All-Star Break.
