KC Royals Shut Down By Jaime Garcia in 4-0 Loss

After taking two of three from St. Louis in Kansas City earlier this season, the KC Royals made their way to the east side of the state in hopes of continuing their winning ways with a victory in the season series against the Redbirds. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be on Friday night.

The Cardinals struck first at home in the second inning when Randal Grichuk hit a two-out single before scoring on Jon Jay’s follow-up triple. Jay then scored when Jaime Garcia was able to help his own cause with a single and the score was 2-0 in favor of the Cards.

The Royals shot themselves in the food during the eighth inning. After Jason Heyward walked with one out, Grichuk hit a fly ball to right-center that was playable for either Lorenzo Cain or Alex Rios but they both slowed down as they approached and the ball ended up glancing off Rios’ glove. Heyward scored and Grichuk ended up at third with a “triple.” Jon Jay hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored Grichuk despite a strong throw from Alex Gordon and the Cardinals increased their lead to 4-0 which ended up being the final score.

The KC Royals were only able to scrounge out five hits in the game as Jaime Garcia absolutely handcuffed them through eight strong innings.

Yordano Ventura only lasted three innings and fifty-two pitches before he left with weakness in his right hand. Thankfully, Joe Blanton was able to come in and give the team almost three scoreless innings. Franklin Morales, Ryan Madson, and Luke Hochevar came in to finish things up.

The Royals are going to have to find a way to hit the ball out of the infield if they want to have a chance to leave St. Louis having won the season series or even split. Hopefully they’ll be able to jump all over Cardinal pitching tomorrow.
