KC Royals Fall to the Yankees 4-2 in Series Finale

Home runs once again sink the KC Royals as the Yankees completed a three-game sweep with a 4-2 win on Wednesday afternoon.

The Royals grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the 1st when Mike Moustakas took a 1-2 breaking ball over the fence in right-center field for his fifth homer of the season.

The Yankees responded with a solo shot of their own in the 2nd when Brian McCann to Chris Young deep to knot the game a 1-1.

Brett Gardner led off the third with a double and was followed by a Chase Headley walk before Alex Rodriguez hooked a ball just over the left field fence to take a 4-1 lead.

Yankee’s starter Michael Pineda, who gave up five runs in as many innings of work less than two weeks ago, cruised for 6 1/3 innings this time around while striking out eight Royals. Moustakas’ homer represented the only run given up by Pineda.

The Royals added an unearned run in the 8th inning on an infield single by Kendrys Morales, scoring Lorenzo Cain when Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorious flipped the ball past first baseman Mark Texeira.

Yankees closer Andrew Miller shut the door on just three pitches in the 9th as the Royals lost their fourth-straight context and now sit at 28-18.

Notables:

The Royals gave up eight homers in the series. Neither Jeremy Guthrie, Jason Vargas or Young are really designed to be pitching in Yankee Stadium, but it is still not a pretty development.
Over this brief four-game losing streak, the Royals have been outscored 29-5

Next: The Royals are off tomorrow but will be in Chicago for a three-game set against the Cubs starting Friday at 3:05 p.m. CT. Jake Arrieta will take the mound for the Cubs, while the Royals have yet to announce their starter.
