Yordano Ventura made things interesting from the get-go today as he walked Kolten Wong and Matt Carpenter to begin the game. Jhonny Peralta followed up with a single to score one run before Matt Adams put the Cardinals up by two with a double. The Cardinals were four batters into the game and were up 2-0 with no outs and runners on second and third. The KC Royals were able to get a quick out when a snap throw from Salvador Perez caught Peralta straying a bit too far off of third base. This helped Ventura settle down a bit and he retired Yadier Molina with a ground ball to Mike Moustakas and Randal Grichuk with a fly ball to Alcides Escobar.

The Royals were finally able to get on the board in the fifth inning when Alex Gordon was able to reach second base after a fielding error by Peter Bourjos and was pushed home on the back of a Salvador Perez single.

The Cardinals got the run right back in the top of the sixth inning when Kolten Wong singled and Matt Carpenter notched himself a two-run homer to make the score 4-1.

In the eighth inning, the Cardinals took the opportunity to add to their lead. Jhonny Peralta singled with two outs and was once again moved to third on a double by Matt Adams. Then Yadier Molina hit a pop up between Alex Gordon and Alcides Escobar. Esky almost made a play on it with his bare hand but wasn’t quite able to complete the catch and the Cardinals extended their lead to 6-1.

And that was it as the Royals weren’t able to come up with anything else and failed to complete the sweep though taking two out of three from the Cards never leaves you with a bitter taste in your mouth. The Royals will begin a series against the Yankees in New York tomorrow. First pitch will be at 12:05 p.m.
