Triple Play Podcast: Royals Roster Questions, Max Scherzer, Shifts

On this week’s episode of the Triple Play Podcast, Reese, Matt, and I start things off by talking about the career of the late Ernie Banks, who passed away last weekend. From there, we discussed the trade that sent Yovani Gallardo to the Rangers in exchange for some prospects, which seems to be a solid trade for both sides, especially if Luis Sardinas can develop into an everyday player in Milwaukee.

We also talked about the Dexter Fowler trade between the Astros and Cubs, with Luis Valbuena and Dan Straily heading to Houston in exchange for the switch-hitting outfielder.

The big news from last week was Max Scherzer signing a seven-year, $210 million deal with the Nationals, that will have the talented righty receiving millions of dollars into the 31st century. Approximately. Scott Boras is smarter than everyone, and we all need to stop denying that. The signing allows the Nats to look into trading one of their other starters, although it would be fun to see them enter 2015 with this super-team.

Royals news was tough to come by last week, so we spent some time speculating on which player might be in line to take the 25th spot on the big league roster. Among players currently in the organization, Ryan Roberts would make some sense in that role, while Yohan Pino and Ryan Madson (if he’s healthy) could be in line for a potential 8th relief spot if the Royals choose that route.

Finally, we wrap up the show with a brief discussion of the hot topic around the league: banning defensive shifts. New commissioner Rob Manfred brought it up as a possibility to boost offense, and a couple of general managers think it is something the “casual fan” would like to see. Neither of those bits of reasoning make a lick of sense, so we tear apart that whole idea in short fashion.
