The Kansas City Royals have a perfect opportunity to gain ground in the AL Central. The next series on the Royals schedule is a four-game set with the Detroit Tigers, the team in front of them in the division. It’s also the last series before the All-Star break, with the Royals currently 4.5 games back. The last time the Royals and Tigers met, Kansas City took advantage of the opportunity and came away with the division lead. Royals tickets are averaging $51.66 for the game for a 23 percent drop from the season average.
7/10 DET Drew Smyly vs. KC Jeremy Guthrie | Avg. Price: $48 | Get-in Price: $16
Jeremy Guthrie has been about as good as you’d expect. His ERA, FIP and WAR are all in line with the numbers he’s put up last year. He has seen a slight improvement in both his strikeout and walk rates, but has also induced less ground balls while giving up slightly more homeruns. Tickets for the game are averaging $48 and the get-in price is $16.
7/11 DET Anibal Sanchez vs. KC Danny Duffy | Avg. Price: $55.87 | Get-in Price: $19
In 12 starts so far this season Danny Duffy is leading the team with a 2.94 ERA – the only player on the team with a sub-3.00 ERA. But he might have a hard time keeping that figure considering he has the worst walk rate on the team, and is getting help from a .234 BABIP. If you look at fielding independent numbers, only Guthrie ranks lower on the team. But fans that come to the second game of the series will be in for a bit of a treat, as there will be a fireworks show at the game. The average price of the game is $55.87 and the get-in price is the highest of the series at $19.
7/12 DET Rick Porcello vs. KC James Shields | Avg. Price: $63.78 | Get-in Price: $15
The third game of the series has the highest average price at $63.78 and a get-in price of $15. The price might have something to do with a Salvador Perez bobblehead giveaway, just in time to celebrate the catcher’s second straight All-Star game nomination. James Shields will start for the Royals in this one, and he continues to be the top of the rotation workhorse the Royals envisioned they were getting. He’s first on the team with a 1.7 WAR, and second with 123.2 innings pitched. He also easily has the best walk rate on the team.
7/13 DET Justin Verlander vs. KC Bruce Chen | Avg. Price: $39 | Get-in Price: $9 (Kids Fest)
The final game before the All-Star break for both teams is also Kids Fest day. There will be plenty of events for kids prior to the game with the gates opening at 11:30 a.m. Bruce Chen gets the start, and he has been far from effective as a starter this year. Outside of one quality start against the White Sox he has failed to get past five innings, and has given up at least four runs in each start. Verlander starts are also no longer the automatic win they used to be on the Tigers schedule this season. The game is the cheapest of the series with a $39 average and a $9 get-in price.
