With it being the first of September, MLB active rosters are allowed to expand.

The first moves the Royals will make will be to call up left-handed pitcher Francisley Bueno and catcher Brett Hayes according to a Bob Dutton report.

Bueno threw 2.1 innings on August 9 for the Royals, but otherwise has been in Omaha where he’s 67.2 innings with a 2.66 ERA. He made 18 appearances in 2012 for the Royals and did well, giving up just three earned runs in 17.1 innings. That being said, as a big leaguer, he’s only struck out eight of 90 batters faced (though he’s only walked three), so he’s not really someone the Royals are looking at for next year. He’s just another arm.

Hayes had three hits for the Royals while Salvador Perez was on the 7-day DL for a concussion. Two of those were doubles, but Hayes was designated for assignment when Perez was eligible to come back and went back to Omaha. In the two weeks since rejoining the Storm Chasers, Hayes has been in a power surge, hitting six homers all in the span of four games. He has struck out 11 times in his ten games back with Omaha though, but he allows for another catching option which now allows the Royals to use George Kottaras more in pinch-hitting situations.

After Tuesday, Wilmington’s season will end, which will return Louis Coleman and Wade Davis to Kansas City. Both had been sent down when Luke Hochevar returned from paternity leave and when Danny Duffy came back to the starting rotation in place of Davis. Neither would be eligible to come back until Wilmington’s season is over, though.

Other players from Omaha could start coming up very soon, as Omaha is one game behind Memphis for the American Northern division lead in the PCL with two games to go. If they get eliminated tonight, players like Irving Falu, Johnny Giavotella, Donnie Joseph, Maikel Cleto, and Everett Teaford could come up – players who have already seen big league time and are currently on the 40 man roster. Chris Dwyer and Justin Marks are both on the 40 man roster right now and could be options (Dwyer starts today’s game in Omaha). The Royals would have to find a spot on the 40 man roster for Christian Colon, Yordano Ventura, Anthony Seratelli, Buddy Baumann, and the recently acquired Clayton Mortensen if they were to bring them up. If Lorenzo Cain is unlikely to return from his oblique strain, he could be moved to the 60 day DL to make a spot. Otherwise, the Royals will have to designate someone for assignment.
