@ArrowFan @michael.allen.engel I totally agree. This is no knock on Quintero. He’s done his job admirably (not well but admirably). He’s been exactly what people thought he would be, maybe a little more clutch at times, and it helped the Royals when they needed it. Now, it’s time for him to go away.

@ArrowFan Going by Catcher ERA (which is not really a great measurement but it gives some idea at least), it’s Pena 3.98, Quintero 4.01. So a wash basically. Trying to find team’s record with each player this year. It’s always tough to quantify a catcher’s defense, though. Quintero has about 90 more innings and twice as many wild pitches, but he’s not the one throwing so the “wildness” of each pitch he has to block isn’t noted in a box score, just that he didn’t block one. I’ve said before that I don’t think Quintero is as good defensively as his reputation and Pena’s not as bad as his reputation so….

Simple answer, I don’t know. Pretty close.

@ArrowFan If they can get him to Omaha, that’d be acceptable, but both catchers are out of options so they’d have to be designated for assignment and then clear waivers to do it. That makes me think that the Royals wouldn’t want to lose Quintero for nothing after what they paid. No, that shouldn’t matter – if something, anything, isn’t performing and needs replaced, it’s best to just cut the losses and move on, but baseball and backup catchers aren’t the only places where people will still try to make it work.

With the current surprising sucsess of our pitching staff I wonder how much credit goes to Pena or Quintero? Who has a statistical advantage? Either way we need to keep both of them around through July.

@michael.allen.engel I say the trades are all ready justified in the fact that Quintero filled his roll and the Royals are only 5 games back from 500. I say park him in at Omaha until you can work out a trade for him, but don’t be in a hurry because he may still be needed.

The Royals keep a pretty tight ship so until something’s official, they must have made a suggestion that he take it down.

I’m sure I speak for a majority of people with remaining brain cells when I say that it would be an incredible mistake for the Royals to keep Quintero over Pena. Making moves to justify other moves is a terrible roster management practice and is entirely ego centered (as opposed to winning centered). Pena is so beloved in the club house, so beloved by fans, and offers a switch hitting option at catcher. Is he as good a defender as Quintero? Probably not. But he’s a much better hitter, and the defensive difference isn’t nearly wide enough to justify keeping Quintero and losing someone who has managed to become a leader despite the fact that he doesn’t even start. Keep Quintero over Pena and GMDM will have taken a significant chunk out of this team’s soul.
