@henrywiggen glad you brought up intelligence because it applies there too. It's like when people say that the CEO of a fortune 500 is "stupid". That's enjoyable. To raise to that level of business there's quite a few IQ points kicking around. Whether or not his ideals are in line with everyone else's is another story, but intelligence is something that CEO certainly has.

OK, let me add something to this. I played ball last weekend with an 81-year-old first baseman. He snared a line drive for a double-play, missed nothing that came his way, nobody took anything off their throws to first, and he went three for four. Now, friends, THAT is an athlete.

Like intelligence, athletes come in all shapes and sizes. But to play baseball, to do what Mr. Butler does, they are special. If you've ever been up close to a ball they've hit or stood anywhere close to a pitch they've thrown, you know what I mean. George Brett said it right (and I'm really tired of quoting this): The farther you get from the dirt, the easier the game seems.

Let the fat boy hit. Plain and simple.

And Pacific Coast Dad is right. Baseball players don't have to be good athletes. They have be gifted athletes.

@admcgregor3 Ah, an oversight on my part. I think my original direction was to get there but I got caught up in my own complaining. The part about body sequencing in the hitting mechanics was written for the purpose of sayin Butler is a tremendous athlete, but I should have done a better job directly pointing that out instead of assuming. You're right.

I'm disappointed you didn't bring the post full circle by connecting you first point ("baseball players aren't athletic") with the criticism of Butler (the hefty, base clogger). I think a lot of the flack Billy gets is because of his body-image, which is pretty ridiculous.
