What I try to keep in mind is that this is just a one year thing. Even if Melky had stayed with the Royals and put up this monster year, he'd be gone by midseason in a trade or end of the season when he hits free agency. Same with Sanchez, he's gone after this season. For this year, yes, it looks like Melky is going to be much more valuable than Sanchez, but the Royals had to take that chance. They need(ed) pitching. In the end, it doesn't make a huge difference to the Royals unless we believe that Melky could make them playoff contenders this year. I do not. So, I don't fret too much.

Good piece, Gage.

I remember last year when all I heard was that Melky would regress to the mean, that Lorenzo Cain should be in CF as a better defender, and that the Royals needed an SP with a big K%. I'm sure some bloggers thought we could have gotten a better starter for a year of Melky than we did, but it's a tough market.

I agreed with the trade while thinking that Melky would continue to produce because his career year was a result of substantive changes in conditioning, approach, and swing, all of which were repeatable. That said, I still agreed with the trade. Can't predict injuries. If Cain can get back, supposed to be starting game action soon, and if Sanchez can get back on the mound and deliver his usual five innings and three runs, and if Verdugo can contribute some it won't be a great trade and the Giants might have the better of it, but the Royals got what they needed.
